Position Summary: The Environmental Health and Safety Manager is responsible for helping to build and manage the Environmental Health and Safety management system, promoting a safe work environment and establishing a world class safety culture within FreshDirect. The Environmental Health and Safety Manager ensures compliance with regulatory standards, FreshDirect policies and industry best practices. The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager will partner with cross-functional business units to identify opportunities that reduce risk, prevent work related injuries, illnesses, reduce workers compensation and liability costs. This position reports to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety and manages three (3) Environmental Health and Safety specialists/coordinators.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as subject matter expert (SME) to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and Fresh Direct health and safety regulations to include Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • Communicate with Operations and staff managers to provide guidance and suggestions on the execution of health and safety policies and procedures, regulations, and best practices
  • Works with Director EHS and business unit leaders to create roadmap that will achieve a world class Environmental Health and Safety management system
  • Review audit data and analyze health and safety compliance reports with department management team to identify action plans and abatement strategies
  • Maintain positive contacts with agency representatives to establish relationships and assist with compliance issues and questions
  • Oversee regulatory compliance programs (e.g., OSHA, EPA, and DOT/PHMSA & FMCSA)
  • Review areas of non-compliance with employees and management teams to foster awareness of non-compliance and communicate appropriate methods
  • Conduct follow-up meetings with management to ensure action plan completion and resolution of non-compliant areas
  • Investigate OSHA complaints and concerns and launch appropriate responses
  • Develop EHS standards, procedures and training programs based on risk and organizational needs
  • Work with Director EHS to establish KPI’s for EHS performance at employee, department and director level. 
  • Serve as a resource for Safety Committees and post-injury management working groups to ensure effective injury prevention and claims management processes are being utilized
  • Mentor, guide and evaluate EHS Coordinators/Specialists 
  • Conduct performance evaluations in a consistent, fair, and objective manner the will facilitate open communication and encourage continuous performance improvement       

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or similar field or related discipline
  • Five (5) years’ experience in EH&S or like area of business
  • Two (2+) years’ experience as a Supervisor or Manager
  • Familiarity with Occupational Health & Safety and/or Environmental Management Systems (i.e. ISO 14001, ANSI Z10, OHSAS 18001)
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred
  • Experience in food industry a plus

 

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Certified Hazard Control Manager (CHCM) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification in the field

·         Demonstrated platform skills with the ability to prepare and present technical subjects to an audience having diverse backgrounds

·         The EH&S Specialist should be outgoing, forward thinking, self-motivated and detail oriented and must also have excellent communication, technical, prioritization and organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast paced environment

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven ability with successfully developing  and implementing programs and systems that comply with federal, state and local EHS regulations as well as company policies, strategies, initiatives and goals
  • Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, and Outlook
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with strong presentation skills
  • Must be resourceful and a skilled problem solver
  • Experienced in the development of tools, resources, programs, and processes
  • Understating of a change management environment; driving and sustaining improvement in a fast paced and ever-changing environment

Working Conditions:

  • Work environment includes Plant, Warehouse, Production, non-production areas and plant grounds
  • Ability to work (maintenance coverage) beyond the normal hours, shift, and on weekends/holidays
  • Flexibility and willingness to work in different environments as needed
  • Physical requirements include but may not be limited to
    • Walking up and down stairs/ladders as well as standing or siting for long periods of time
    • Navigating uneven surfaces
    • Ability to tolerate temperatures of 38 degrees or below
    • Comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs.
