Laboratory Technologist - Hershey - Stuarts Draft, VA

 

 

 

Position summary

Job Location:  Stuarts Draft, VA   

 

Summary:

 

The Laboratory Technologist will be responsible for process monitoring, performing lab evaluations, food safety inspections, and compliance control. This position is a first shift position. The work week for this position is Sunday through Thursday. Overtime may be required, possibly on short notice. The schedule is subject to change depending on laboratory/ plant needs.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Conduct routine and non-routine analyses of in-process materials, raw materials, environmental samples, finished goods, or stability samples.
  • Calibrate, validate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
  • Compile laboratory test data, perform appropriate analyses, and prepare graphs, charts, and reports.
  • Complete documentation needed to support testing procedures including data capture forms, equipment logbooks, or inventory forms.
  • Evaluate analytical methods and procedures to determine how they might be improved.
  • Identify quality problems and recommend solutions.
  • Interpret test results, compare them to established specifications and control limits, and make recommendations on appropriateness of data for release.
  • Investigate or report questionable test results.
  • Monitor testing procedures to ensure that all tests are performed according to established item specifications, standard test methods, or protocols. 
  • Participate in out-of-specification and failure investigations using analytical skills to determine root cause and recommend remedial actions; participate in extraneous evaluations and provide feedback to QA and Production Managers.
  • Provide assistance to QA Managers and Production Managers in research and development, production technology, and quality control. 
  • Clean and sterilize laboratory equipment, including utensils and the general laboratory areas and surfaces. 
  • Prepare media for use in the laboratory.
  • Taste or smell foods or ingredients to ensure flavors meet specifications, or to select samples with specific characteristics. 
  • File QA Department CPOP records, library samples, and sort product samples for testing. 
  • Inventory QA laboratory supplies and work with others to order materials as needed.

 

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:

 

  • Microsoft Suite - Word and Excel
  • SAP, LIMS or LabWare a plus, or the ability to learn new programs
  • Basic math skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to adhere to standard laboratory protocols and test methods
  • Ability to work in a sterile setting
  • Position will require the individual to work with chemicals
  • Ability to train others 
  • Ability to work in a group setting and to collaborate with others on duties and schedules
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work with limited direction; self motivated
  • Must be flexible, a fast learner, and self-motivated.

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: 

 

Education:

  • High school diploma is required
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in food science, microbiology, chemistry, or biology is preferred

Experience:

  • Experience in a lab environment required
