Job Summary:

Campus Dining Services (CDS) within Housing & Dining Services invites applications for the Food Safety Specialist position. This position is responsible for the development, implementation, and administering of associated trainings related to all aspects of food safety for all operations within CDS, consisting of approximately 3 million meals annually served in 14 operations across campus. Additionally, this position is in charge of verifying food safety HACCP systems and ensuring correction of out of compliance items through collaboration with the food safety team, culinary team, and associated CDS operations and administration.

What your key responsibilities will be:

Training Development

  • Appraise effectiveness of training and documents progress of participants.
  • Develop and conducts multiple training programs to meet organizational training needs.
  • Prepare teaching plans and materials, identify objectives, and provide instructions for multiple work units in a variety of training disciplines, which include and encompass all levels of work.
  • Research and formulate innovative training approaches for unique work situations.
  • Present training materials and any other information to individuals or groups suited to the characteristics and the needs of the audience.
  • Clearly and concisely convey training and any other information orally and in writing to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the information and the message.
  • Maintain training schedules that are accurate and are communicated to participants in a timely manner.

Food Safety

  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of all food safety standards required within the commissary and cook/chill operation.
  • Evaluate all areas of the operation to ensure each operation is meeting and are in compliance with all local & state sanitation and food safety standards.
  • Ensure that all documentation related to safe food production within this operation are being taken and recorded correctly.
  • Understand and use the Dining Services HACCP recording systems and software to assist in this area.
  • Provide input and recommendations on the use and implementation of any HACCP recording systems.
  • Continually evaluate and make recommendations for improvements to current Food Safety Procedure.
  • Serve on the food safety response team and respond to all food safety emergencies as appropriate to the work assignment. If a work cell phone is provided, a response call must be within an hour of the original call and/or message.

New Employee Onboarding

  • Support Dining Services’ employee onboarding/orientation efforts by instructing the portion related to food safety.

Administrative

  • Submit all necessary paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and update all necessary records pertaining to scope of work.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the department’s strategic plan, long and short range goals, and action plans.

Supervision

  • Supervise lead staff focused in sustainability and food safety initiatives.

What you should know:

This is an essential services position and may be called back from off duty to report to work, also may be required to work different shifts to meet the needs of the university.  The incumbent is required to respond after hours, during emergencies and report to work for their regular assigned shift during emergency campus closures.

The starting salary for this position is $48,000.00.

Qualifications

 

What we require:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Substitution: an Associate’s Degree with at least five years of experience in developing and managing food safety programs and audits in large production settings may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Minimum three years’ large institutional foodservice experience.
  • Current status as a Certified Professional – Food Safety (CP-FS) or equivalent.
  • Current ServSafe certification appropriate to the work assignment, or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.

What you will need:

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current local and state department health codes, as well as FDA regulations.
  • Ability to work until 7:00pm at least 3 nights/week and at least 1 weekend/month
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

What we’d like you to have:

  • Hands-on culinary experience in a high-volume foodservice operation.

Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are most highly qualified.
