The primary role of the Food Safety Specialist is to assure the Company that s/he provides facilitation of all facets of Compliance with Quality Assurance initiatives, including Food Safety, Social Responsibility, Customers Claims and/or Inquires, Federal and State regulations, Certifications, Supplier Compliance, Labeling, Budgeting, and Internal Communications. This would be accomplished by performing the tasks below and identifying opportunities and areas of improvement in company operations and utilize Otis McAllister’s resources more efficiently.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage supplier and warehouse verification program of which includes risk assessment for FSMA compliance and review key food safety & quality programs.
  • Distribute Quality Manual to new suppliers and storage facilities with responsibility to collect signed acknowledgments of receipt from all suppliers and storage facilities for Company records.
  • Manages FSQA programs such as Federal FSMA – FSVP, HARPC, Food Defense, Trace-ability (i.e. Mock Recalls), Testing (i.e. Heavy Metal, Microbiological and Pesticide) and any State food safety regulations.
  • Assist in customer documentation request and monitor customers’ independent portal/databases.
  • Assist with Quality Control Administration in origin.
  • Respond independently to Quality Assurance inquiries timely and accurately:
  • Receives, investigates and responds to Customer’s claims (in-house and outside).
  • Establish and implement remedies to inquiries independently as necessary.
  • Maintains Claims Report spreadsheet. * Assist with Certifications and yearly audits (i.e. Organic, Kosher, Non-GMO, Whole Grain, etc.).
  • Provide annual budget forecasting input for various internal divisions.
  • Serves as part of a review team for labeling compliance.
  • Participate in association courses, website training and professional seminars.
  • Assist in developing policies and procedures.
  • Update and maintain Master Contact List (MCL) of key contacts such as vendors, warehouses, organizations, and associations.
  • Continuously update the definition of Quality Assurance as it applies to the Company’s Quality Assurance program and educate staff and management.

Essential Job Requirements and Experience:

  • S. degree in Food Science and/or advanced degree in an industry-related field (preferred) from an accredited post secondary institution.
  • Minimum of three to five (3-5) years of increasingly responsible industry-related experience in similar positions within food safety compliance.
  • ertified as a Preventive Control Qualified Individual (PCQI) or become one in 6 months’ time.
  • Experience with and understanding of Federal (FSMA, especially FSVP) and State regulations (i.e. Prop. 65).
  • Clear knowledge of GFSI scheme BRC (preferred) and SQF.
  • SOP and Program writing experience.
  • Food safety training in similar export/import business.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of effective oversight of work of others (external/internal).
  • Ability to deal effectively and professionally with all types of individuals.
  • Excellent communication skills to include written, verbal and interpersonal.
  • High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, timely follow up, and results oriented.
  • Independent self-starter with proven organizational and analytical skills with the ability to work with little supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Dynamics Navision, and advanced proficiency in Internet research and usage.
  • Knowledgeable different Portals (i.e. Tracegains, Safetychain, ICIX, SEDEX, TraQtion, Global MRL, etc.)
  • Ability to travel as necessary (domestic and international).

Professional Responsibilities:

All employees are expected to keep abreast of current trends and techniques in the food trading industry; participate in the activities of professionals appropriate for the food trading business and the Company (if and when appropriate); pursue continuing education as needed.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to sit at computer for several hours/day.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively and independently on matters of significance as needed.
