The Food Safety Advisor will serve as the technical center of expertise for food safety management in the Retail ampm business and be accountable for developing and implementing food safety programs. The role reports to the Business Continuity, Crisis Management, Security and Food Safety Manager and is a member of the Health, Safety, Security & Environmental (HSSE) Team. The role also works closely with the Offer Development Team in assisting to evaluate the intent, value and execution of food programs and processes in the business.

Key accountabilities


  • Technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) to assure:
    • quality control for current and new food offers
    • food safety compliance requirements
    • risk reduction guidance for alcohol, tobacco and other specialty products

  Interpret federal, state and local regulatory guidelines to assure the ongoing compliance of the food safety program and convey information to internal stakeholders for dissemination

  Engage with stakeholders to identify potential quality and food safety exposure risks & annually review/update food safety risks on the business risk register

  Develop food safety policies and procedures (program) for retail convenience sites based on needs assessment and applicability. Examples include but not limited to:

  • Ensure NSF certification
  • Chemical program
  • Pest program
  • Food related job guides
  • UPC tracking
  • Temperature validation studies
  • Nutrition Compliance

  Annually review the food safety sections of the Store Systems Manuals, Third-Party audit forms and BP standard Contract language around food safety

  Update the Food Crisis Business Continuity Plan annually; and develop a full-scale Food Crisis training module for the annual exercise

  Manage all food quality/safety related incidents & conduct investigations as necessary for:

  • product and proprietary recalls
  • food related consumer complaints
  • product irregularity or other complaints involving consumable products
  • Provide guidance on CORE inspection criteria and develop food safety audit program
  • Provide guidance for proprietary ampm food product suppliers and wholesalers
    • Ensure vendor food safety audits are current and meet BP requirements


Essential Education

Bachelor’s degree in food science, microbiology or related field required.

Essential experience and job requirements


  • Minimum 5 years of experience in food manufacturing, food safety and/or auditing
  • Strong knowledge of HACCP Food safety programs and requirements to mitigate Food Incident risks while maximizing customer satisfaction
  • Demonstrated track record in the development, implementation and communication of food safety programs.
    • Development of retail quality control and food safety programs, policies and procedures
  • Ability to provide quality control guidance, conduct food safety training and/or create trending informational presentations as necessary
  • Ability to communicate (verbal, written effectively and clearly) to a variety of audiences
  • Proficient capability with software programs including Microsoft Office; Word, Excel, Power Point and other applicable software
  • Ability to partner with stakeholders to conduct retail site visits

Desirable criteria & qualifications


  • Experience in food quality control within a franchisee convenience store market
  • Additional Preferred certifications include: Safety Food Quality (SQF) Expert & Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) Expert certifications preferred
  • Deep knowledge within the Food industry and within a Food Safety environment.
  • Demonstrated track record in the management of Supplier QA programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with managing State and Local regulatory contacts in relation to the Food Acts and FDA guidelines
