Purpose of Role

The Surlean family is looking for a new team member in Research & Development to help us enrich and nurture our customer relationships through customized product service and problem-solving. The R&D Technologist will be responsible for new product development from benchtop through commercialization by functioning as a bridge between R&D and Plant Operations. This role will report directly to Sr. Research Chef as well as indirectly to the Director of Commercialization.

Principle Accountabilities

 

Benchtop/Kitchen Lab:

  • Make batches following formulas and recipes for various projects and customers
  • Run experiments and tests on samples and collect & enter data in an organized manner
  • Maintain kitchen inventory, equipment, cleanliness, and organization for efficient batching and tastings.
  • Lead group tastings and evaluations; must be willing to taste and evaluate a variety of ingredients and products

 

Commercialization/Plant Floor:

  • Learn functionality and setup of all equipment on the production floor and familiarize with manufacturing tools and databases
  • Support commercialization runs by keeping and maintaining production notes on all projects to ensure proper repeatability on production runs.
  • Work closely with Commercialization on new commercialization projects by helping to coordinate and communicate with proper department leads
  • Work closely with QA and Ops to monitor and control newly commercialized products.

 

Customer interaction:

  • Support customer presentations and ideations
  • Coordinate with and ship samples to customers as requested.

 

Key Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in foodservice or food product development / manufacturing.
  • Must possess basic math and computer skills, and be able to read formula spreadsheets.
  • Must possess good analytical and logical problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Be willing to taste and evaluate a variety of food products.
  • Must have excellent oral and written skills at a technical and general level.
  • Can stand for long periods at a time and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficient in English
  • Comfortable with computers; can navigate Windows 8 OS and Microsoft Office 365

 

Preferred:

  • Culinary Degree or Bachelor Degree in food science or related field preferred.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in kitchen or lab environment.
  • Spanish speaking a plus
  • Proficient in Windows 8 & MS Excel 2016, Office 365; familiar with SharePoint
  • Experience in quality assurance in a food processing environment a plus.
