Job Summary

The Quality Assurance & Food Safety Manager will be responsible for maintaining the quality and reliability of our products. They inspect and test our products at various stages in the production process. They will be required to set up and perform testing on materials or finished products to measure product performance under a variety of conditions and be responsible for the documentation of the test results.

After products have been fully tested, the quality assurance & food safety manager will evaluate the data. They will prepare summaries to show how the product might differ from existing standards of quality and reliability, suggest changes in how products are made to achieve the best quality possible, recommend methods to minimize the amount of scrap, or leftover material. Specialize in product design, purchasing, inventory control, or research and development.

The Quality Assurance & Food Safety Manager must be familiar with Lean Manufacuring Methodology and manage department utilizing principles and tool from the lean toolbox. This position requires a passion for continuous improvement across multiple shifts, departments, and plants. Other duties require effective verbal and written communication skills, visual acuity to written and computer screen data, attention to detail, and the ability to influence people in all situations and at all levels.

Essential Job Functions

As a key member of the management team and the Quality Assurance professional you will:

  • Lead the Quality Department as a results driven leader, building trust and credibility throughout all levels of the organization.
  • Create and model an ownership mindset throughout all quality teams, by measuring KPIís for all departments/plants through personal and team accountability.
  • Serve as a Liaison with customersí auditors and ensuring the execution of corrective action and compliance with customersí specifications.
  • Improve and manage Food Safety and Quality systems to ensure product food safety including specifications, preventive controls, and test methods are in compliance, throughout all shifts/plants.
  • Develop and maintain all aspects of food safety and Quality Systems including GFSI, HACCP, FSMA, Internal Audits, Recall, Traceability, Environmental Monitoring, Allergen Control programs and insure all departments know and understand purpose and protocol.
  • Analyze data, identify opportunities, and report on trends to drive progress toward food safety metrics including Foreign Material Incidents.
  • Management programs to drive streamlining within the food safety arena.
  • Deliver food safety and technical support to departments throughout the organization
  • Craft and develop food safety education and training tools.
  • Contribute to quality system reviews and actively participate in defining solutions.
  • Analyze and report on data to communicate to Management and Departmental Teams.
  • Support continuous improvement projects and cross-functional quality initiatives.
  • Adhere to GMPs, Standard Operating Procedures, and Safety Regulations consistently.
  • Interface with staff (10-20 Direct Reports) regarding changes in procedures to promote consistency throughout department teams.
  • Passion and alignment with our mission, vision, values and operating principles.
  • Interview, coach, counsel and discipline employees. Communicate job expectations, plan, monitor, appraise and review employees.
  • Update job knowledge by keeping abreast of trends and developments in quality management.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Lean Manufacturing Certification.
  • HACCP Certification.
  • Supervisory and/or proven leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

Educational and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelorís Degree in Food Science, or similar field.
  • A minimum of 4 years of progressive responsibility in food processing and/or quality assurance and food safety procedures and policies, or equivalent.
  • Experience with 3rd party food safety audits.
  • Experience with GFSI standards.

Physical Requirements

  • Intermittently on feet for approximately 8-12 hours daily on concrete floors.
  • Walking, climbing steps, squatting, twisting, turning, stretching, grabbing, pulling, pushing and bending.
  • Visual and hearing acuity within normal limits.
  • Ability to work in areas with different scents from chemicals, inks, etc.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time while operating a computer and peripheral devices.
  • Occasional lifting of various materials up to approximately 50 lbs.

Work Environment

An environment typical of manufacturing and production facilities. Exposure includes, but is not limited to, continuous noise, scent of materials, bright work stations, machinery with moving parts.
