The Role

Provides support on Foreign Material (FM) initiatives and responses (both proactive and reactive) to assure minimized impact of FM issues to Lamb Weston (LW) and to its customers. This position supports collaborative efforts with RQI, Engineering, Operations, Ag Operations, and Quality / Food Safety staff to ensure LW is positioned to achieve and maintain “Best in Industry” capabilities to deliver food products to our customers that are free of foreign material. The incumbent supports and helps lead FM prevention efforts by employing a variety of measures, new & emerging detection and exclusion technologies, as well as identification and implementation of industry best practices.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage the process of receiving, triage, and identification of FM samples submitted by consumers, customers, and manufacturing facilities.
  • Utilize sophisticated lab instrumentation to analyze FM samples. Maintain required skills in the instrumentation to perform accurate sample analysis.
  • Duties will include equipment calibration, maintenance, and testing of process materials. * Respond to customer complaints using LW’s complaint management system to provide Food Safety and Quality Managers a thorough investigation of FM incidents.
  • Utilize a continuous improvement thought process for forensic FM identification to optimize the speed and accuracy of sample analysis.
  • Provide insight, leadership, and support of technical input to ensure “Best in Industry” technological innovations of LW production lines, suppliers, and LW co-manufactures. Optimum technological solutions or improvements must be able to be cost-effectively deployed and yield desired results.
  • Provide technical review or assistance in significant FM incidents to:
  • Accurately identify issues for determination of risk.
  • Partner with management in making logical, data-based product dispositions.
  • Create summaries of FM incidents, including trend analysis by product type, and production facility.
  • Support Food Safety Management and Operations in verification and validation testing of FM detection and elimination equipment. Perform GAP analysis to best practice to determine effective preventative or corrective actions for deficiencies.
  • Support determination and implementation of product dispositions regarding FM product restrictions.
  • Provide technical support for FSMA physical hazards, HACCP, plant-based FMECA analysis, and FM reduction programs.
  • Provide leadership for FM reduction practices and champion the development of FM reduction techniques.
  • Help develop and provide FM incident response training to corporate and manufacturing facility staff to ensure best practices are being used, procedures are being followed, and the effective use of FM data management system.
  • Develop lab procedures for various methods of analysis.
  • Develop and provide training for FM response at the manufacturing facilities to ensure FM incidents are appropriately handled and documented to prevent FM entering commerce.

Skills & Experience

  • Strong interest and ability to perform advanced laboratory testing using sophisticated instrumentation and chemical tests.
  • This position requires a minimum of a BS degree in: Forensics, Engineering, Biological Sciences, Food Science, Chemistry or related field. Analytical laboratory experience preferred.
  • 5 years relevant work experience required, with vegetable or extensive potato processing experience preferred.
  • Strong skills in problem-solving; proven abilities to interpret diverse data sets in a logical and rational fashion.
  • Demonstrated organization skills as it relates to work environment, sample, and data management.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to effectively work in team and independent settings.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products. Programming experience and understanding of other software platforms preferred.
  • Working knowledge of food production and process flow dynamics.
  • Strong understanding of food safety.
  • Experience using fundamental statistical and analytical tools.
  • Excellent negotiation skills when working through conflict resolution.
  • Experience with USDA/ FDA regulated facilities preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time and work in manufacturing environments.

Physical Requirements:

Incumbent must have the ability to effectively perform all of the following physical demands without assistance:
