Perrigo Nutritionals, in Georgia, VT has an opportunity for a Microbiological Environmental Monitoring (EM) Intern for the Summer of 2019. The shift for this position is 8:00 AM-4:30 PM Monday-Friday.

Goal: To learn and develop skills associated with aspects of microbiological food safety programs to assure product safety and quality.

  • Food Safety Training: Review recent scientific literature associated with foodborne illness and control of pathogens. Summarize pertinent findings associated with powdered nutritional products and production facilities.
    • Prepare slide presentations that will be incorporated into plant employee training activities. Slides generated will be used to supplement training for:
      • FDA FSMA
      • cGMP
      • SQF
      • Environmental monitoring
      • Allergen control
      • Food defense
      • and will include assessment information to confirm employee understanding.
  • Environmental monitoring: Learn appropriate aseptic sampling techniques to support the environmental monitoring program. Report results in a format that can easily be understood and used to support directed control and continuous improvement.
    • Learn aseptic technique to sample different aspects of the environment for Cronobacter
    • Assist with investigative swab sampling to determine contamination harborage points and help to establish better control programs
    • Enter environmental data into excel database, summarize and trend data.
    • Use analyzed data to develop presentations that will be used to increase facility awareness and drive control improvement
    • Attend Cronobacter control meetings and document meeting minutes. Enter associated control corrective actions into the Intelex corrective action management system.
  • Risk Analysis: Learn risk management skills to assess building maintenance and improvement activities.
    • Learn risk analysis skills to support assessment of building maintenance/improvement activities and contractor activity while maintaining environmental control of the facility.
    • Apply learned skills to assist in the development of an electronic system to document, review and support project risk assessments.
    • Understand and support associated environmental monitoring activities.
  • Assist with environmental monitoring and sanitation activities as needed
    • Cleaning validation/verification associated with change control
    • Shut down preparations
    • Potential swab activities comparing different sanitizing agents
  • Assist with Nutritional Operations validation/verification activities as needed
    • Review/secure validation/verification documents associated with change controls
    • Develop searchable validation document index
  • The intern will be expected to provide an oral presentation on activities and learnings during the mid-point and at the completion of the internship.


  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college and pursuing Bachelor's Degree in a Science Field or related discipline. Microbiology preferred.
  • Must have had a course in Microbiology.
  • Must be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing.
  • Students pursuing a graduate degree will be considered.
  • Ideal candidate has attention to detail.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting frequently. Standing, walking, reaching, stooping, and bending/stooping. This would require the ability to, but not limited to, sit and type, lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. Required to use hands and fingers to handle; feel or operate objects.
