Position Overview:

The Product Development Scientist will work in the Apopka Global Juice Center and will manage Retail Juice product development projects for the Odwalla brand from their initiation to completion.

Function Specific Activities:

This will require ability to conduct concept development, product development, stability assessment, assist with launch preparation and supervision of commercial production for juices, fruit smoothies, juice drinks, protein and other beverage products to meet the business requirements internally and within project timeline.

 

Design, develop, conduct and/or review experiments in order to deliver new products: evaluate ingredients, product or packaging safety, efficacy or claims. This work will involve laboratory and pilot plant environments.

 

The associate will represent R&D on cross functional team interacting with Marketing, Supply Chain, Procurement, Finance, Regulatory, Program Management, Quality and Finance to deliver projects on time and within budget.

Self-manage multiple projects to successful outcome in a fast paced working environment.

Function Specific Activities:

  • Design and develop new products from bench top to commercialization while staying within specified parameters of cost and label claims; evaluate new ingredients, verify nutritional profiles, and conduct product or packaging stability assessments to deliver against design.
  • Act as scientific, regulatory, technical or quality expert and consultant by responding to targeted questions from the field or other departments/ business units. This includes acting as a resource for general information and acting as a consultant for other technical personnel in the Company & manufacturing facilities.
  • Develop new ingredient and product specifications and own formula entry into formula management system.
  • Manage documentation and records in order to ensure that they are complete, current, secure and easily retrievable. This may include designing, organizing or maintaining technical or regulatory records (e.g., paper formula files) and reports.
  • Identify, classify, maintain, and protect files, documentation and sensitive information consistent with record handling and retention requirements. Record data from analyses or experiments in a computer, log book or laboratory notebook.
  • Self-training to keep abreast of developing technologies, lifestyle & nutritional trends to maintain competitive edge within the Premium Natural Health Beverage category.

Must Haves & preferred experience/duties:

  • Proven experience in product development and scale up at plant
  • Technical fundamentals and problem solving ability
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills to translate technical information into easily-understood business language
  • Cross functional & project management skills
  • Experience in juice, dairy, protein product development and commercialization a plus
  • Experience in validation of Non-GMO Project a plus
  • Exposure to working in multicultural environments preferred
  • A good understanding of NHB customer base, nutritional needs & culinary trends.

Technical Skills:

  • Proprietary Composition Information: Ability to recognize and protect proprietary information as it relates to formulas and ingredients.
  • Basic Project Management: Knowledge of project management principles and the ability to apply the principles, tools and techniques to develop/plan, manage or execute projects or workplans to ensure successful completion (e.g. on time, within budget).

  • Endurance & flexibility: Willingness and ability to occasionally function effectively over extended periods of time.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Food Science or related field / Master's Degree preferred

Related Work Experience: At least 5 years of work experience required
