JOB SUMMARY

Farther Farms is seeking a motivated individual to work in the Research, Development, and Food

Safety Laboratories at the company’s Rochester food manufacturing and research site. Among other research, the candidate will conduct shelf life studies, challenge studies with pathogens, and optimize process techniques to achieve viable log reductions. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for leading the QA and Food Safety Program at the company’s pilot food processing facility. The ideal candidate will have a background in Microbiology with knowledge of FDA testing procedures, SQF, and GMP.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Farther Farms is an NSF supported, growing food technology company formed out of Cornell University. The company is working to develop and commercialize new processing methodologies for food products.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Research:

  • Prepare samples for analytical and microbiological testing of food products, ingredients, and environmental testing
  • Test food samples for foodborne outbreak investigations and microbial counts (including pathogens)
  • Conduct shelf life studies and challenge studies
  • Optimize process techniques to achieve viable log reductions
  • Ensure compliance and accreditation to the ISO 17025 standard
  • Oversee laboratory administration of an NSF sponsored research grant
  • Work with the team on NSF Phase II grant application after the end of Phase I research

Food Safety and QA/QC:

  • Develop food safety HACCP and recall plans along with pre-requisite GMP practices
  • Serves as SQF Practitioner and site Preventive Controls Qualified Individual
  • Ensure adherence to QA/QC standards
  • Monitor GMP Program on the production floor
  • Audit quality systems such as SQF, Food Safety Plan, GMP, and SPOs for the production plant
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of all manufacturing operations, end-products, raw materials, packaging materials, and quality specifications and standards
  • Train employees on Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and other hazardous communication pertaining to new chemicals/hazardous ingredients as they are introduced
  • Identify or provide specialized Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary
  • Evaluate and assess plant quality, capability, needs, strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities
  • Communicate food quality standards to plant personnel through training, corrective action, quality audits, and production and facility monitoring

General:

  • Develop and maintain product specification sheets for Company products
  • Develop and maintain labels in accordance with regulatory labeling requirements
  • Author or contribute to technical proposals, summaries, presentations, and project reports
  • Maintain technical documentation, laboratory notebooks, invention records
  • Solve complex problems with a broad perspective to identify creative and innovative solutions
  • Partner with team members to develop key tasks and project plans for timely completion of goals

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, required
  • 1 year Microbiology, required
  • 1 year GMP experience, preferred
  • 1 year food science experience, preferred
  • 1 year Quality Assurance and Quality Control experience, preferred
  • Valid HACCP certification, preferred
  • Valid SQF certification, preferred
