Director - Product Development, Research and Food Science (Food Technologist)
provides technical and scientific leadership for product development and
quality support functions to assure safety and quality of all product sold at
Sprouts. This individual monitors the quality of
private label products and ensures Sprouts’ suppliers develop and
commercialize products according to the company’s food safety, quality, and
regulatory compliance requirements. The Director, Food Science, demonstrates
the company’s core values of respect, honesty, integrity, diversity,
inclusion and safety. This individual is the company leader on ingredient and
ethical standards, and strategy, while utilizing knowledge of food
ingredients, food science, and consumer marketing insights to identify
products and formulas to meet customer and business product strategies, in
partnership with merchandising. Further, the director measures, advises
and enforces agreed upon execution of ingredient and ethical practices across
all fresh, private label and branded products. The director also actively
participates in innovation activities and contributes to the development of
new product strategies and ideas.
- Serve as subject matter expert on
ingredient standards, regulatory affairs, and product development
processes for all fresh, private label, and branded products sold at
- Partner with Merchant Team and
provide strategic and technical guidance to continue developing and
enhancing Sprouts’ ingredient standards and positioning statements.
- Partner with Sustainability Team
to ensure products sourced adhere to Sprouts’ sustainability standards
(i.e., ethically and environmentally conscious)
- Partner with Food Safety Team to
ensure regulatory compliance for new and existing products (e.g., ensure
clear label standards for in-store generated scale labels).
- Perform routine supplier site
visits to inspect food processing areas and ensure compliance with
regulatory and Sprouts’ standards (e.g., sanitation, safety, quality,
and waste management).
- Develop and document food
ingredient specifications, nutrition facts, allergen labeling, and
- Manage product ingredients and
formulas within Sprouts’ database.
- Keep company abreast of new
ingredients, technologies, and national/international trends, and
recommend for consideration where appropriate.
- Develop and administer Sprouts’
private label vendor certification programs.
- Develop internal QA/Quality
control program for Private Label products using sensory and nutritional
analysis to reduce cost and improve quality.
- Perform other duties and
responsibilities as assigned.
Skills, Abilities and Physical Requirements
- This position requires a B.S.
degree or higher in Science (e.g., Food Science, Chemistry, Physics,
Biology, Packaging, Nutrition) or Engineering (Chemical, Biomedical,
- A minimum of five (5) years’
experience in food research, food product development, dietary
supplements/body care and/or food regulatory compliance (FDA, FSMA,
DSHEA, USDA, etc) is required.
- A minimum of five (5) years’
experience in the food retail sector is highly preferred.
- Sound working knowledge of food
science principles, GMP, HACCP, food safety, sanitary practices and

cross-functional business teams and suppliers.
- Proven ability to develop food
and beverage products that exceed customer expectations.
- Ability to communicate complex
technical information in a clear and concise manner, in both written and
verbal forms, to audiences of differing technical understanding.
- Strong communication, analytical,
and problem solving skills.
