What you will do:

The R&D Sr. Scientist, Branded plays a key role in Tillamook’s branded retail business, where innovation is required for competitive growth and sales.  This innovation is driven by technological advancement, research, continuous improvement, quality improvement, cost savings, applications, and sales support.  The R&D Sr. Scientist plays a central role in the Tillamook branded innovation process, acting as a steward of CI, quality, and cost savings projects, managing and conducting technical research, interfacing with 3rd party researchers and universities, developing products for the Tillamook brand, and traveling to plant trials and co-manufacturers. The R&D Sr. Scientist provides statistical information for product development by identifying testing methods and samples for Tillamook branded products. Collaboration with internal and external development groups on the appropriate experimental design for formulation that reduces experimental time that enhances discovery reliability and data driven results. Project examples include designing and leading R&D Technologists in technically complex projects to demonstrate Technical Readiness for commercialization and testing verification for shelf life forecasting. Through these key competencies the R&D Sr. Scientist will ensure continued and enhanced performance and ideation of the Tillamook retail branded business.  

Here’s a day in the life:

·         Research and ideation related to new technologies which could offer competitive advantage.

·         Designing and leading R&D Technologists in technically complex projects to demonstrate Technical Readiness for commercialization and testing verification for shelf life forecasting.

·         Design robust statistical industrial experiments with defined outcomes and success criteria.

·         Design and perform scale up trials to transition from ideation through feasibility and to commercialization.

·         Write, represent, and submit feasibility and project charters. Interface with executives to defend project designs and success criteria.

·         Manage projects across a cross functional team of Operations, Engineering, R&D, Quality, Marketing and Sales teams. These projects could be related to CI, Quality Improvement, and Novel Technology.

·         Communicate effectively written and oral. Present statistical information and ideas to cross functional teams.

·         Interface with university and private research firms. Engage in relationships which allow Tillamook to lead instead of follow industry research direction. Form and lead consortiums dedicated to precompetitive research in areas that benefit our branded business.

·         Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; and participating in professional societies.

·         Prepare and review documents to protect Tillamook including issues relating to patents, Contracts, nondisclosure agreements, and purchase agreements.

Skills you’ll need:


Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Food Science or related field


Bachelors + 8 years’ experience in dairy ingredient field

Masters +6 years’ experience in dairy ingredient field

PhD + 3 years’ experience in dairy ingredient field

A dairy/cheese/fermentation dairy background is preferred.

Must have varied experience including dairy manufacture, research, & laboratory analytics. 

The successful candidate will have previous experience with leading technical teams, managing statistical processes and procedures in a dairy foods facility and will show competence in the following: Microsoft Office Suite, Statistical Software, Manufacturing Methodology, Design of Experiments (DOE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Project Management Procedures, and Data Analysis.

Green Belt / Black Belt designations will be considered a plus.

Must be personable and able to interact at all levels of the organization with outstanding verbal, written and collaborative skills.

Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Valid Oregon Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.

Physical Requirements:

Administration :  Individual work space, desk and computer. May not be temperature controlled, could have loud background noises.  May include entering production facility and walking on uneven, slippery surfaces and encountering forklift traffic. Requires sitting majority of shift; can include standing and walking to accomplish tasks. May require stooping, bending and crouching to file, retrieve supplies. Occasional lifting of 25 pounds. 

Production: Space can be crowded with manufacturing equipment.  Must remain aware of forklift traffic.  Noisy; some areas can be dusty.  May encounter extremes in temperature.  Requires sitting most of shift, occasionally walking on uneven, slippery surfaces. Duties may include lifting up to 80-100 pounds and maneuvering heavy equipment and/or parts.
