The R&D Scientist will use his/her technical leadership abilities to proactively lead technically challenging key business initiatives (innovation, value engineering, etc.) and solve significant technical problems. He/she will make advances in science, technology, or other capability that result in new and/or improved products, packages, processes, or methodologies. He/she is responsible for driving development of new snack or food products from concept through commercialization, resulting in the launch of new snack or food products. He/she is also responsible for the improvement of existing products, relocation of products between production facilities, value engineering, and technology development to enable new product development or cost improvement. The candidate must be able to successfully perform the requirements of the job autonomously, with limited managerial oversight. He/she may be called upon to train/coach others in their area of expertise. He/she may be called upon to direct the technical work of others and/or lead cross-functional teams. He/she will not work in lab everyday (20% of time maximum), but primarily (80% time) this role will work with the business team (marketing, manufacturing, finance) and co-manufacturers on product design and formulation simulation systems.

o   This position is responsible for formulating and designing complex products.  Projects must deliver the agreed upon metrics, including (but not limited to) timeline, cost, aesthetics, commercial feasibility and consumer relevance with limited management support. 

o   This position is responsible for efficiently designing, planning, coordinating and executing complex experiments from bench-top through scale-up. 

o   The incumbent in this role will be accountable for all technical deliverables in a project, including:

o   Creation of detailed work plans to ensure adherence to finished product critical success factors, financial metrics, and often demanding timelines

o   Development/validation of physical and functional prototypes

o   Assessment of process integration & co-packing feasibility

o   Documentation of final formulation and process parameters, while ensuring finished product compliance with Nutrition, Regulatory and Food Safety requirements

o   Technical assessment/recommendations around new materials and/or processes, as needed

o   Must be able to work in a small group, remotely located away from broader R&D team.

o   As appropriate, lead cross-discipline project teams for projects that they are involved in.

o   The incumbent must communicate (written or orally) complex messages clearly, concisely, and in a manner appropriate to the specific audience.

o   The incumbent is responsible for owning the technical implementation of projects and must be able to independently troubleshoot and resolve various project challenges.

o   Become subject matter experts (SMEs) in a specific, job-related area.

o   Mentor, coach and train employees in the R&D department in their area of expertise.

o   Partner with R&D peers (e.g. Process or Product Research) to create, develop, and qualify products.


o   This position requires a BS, MS or PhD in Science (e.g., Food Science, Chemistry, Physics,

Biology) or Technology (Food Technology, Engineering Technology). For BS degree completion, ideal candidate has 12 years of relevant experience. For MS degree completion, ideal candidate has 10 years of relevant experience. For PhD degree completion, ideal candidate has 8 years of relevant experience.

Other acceptable degrees are BS in Engineering with 8 years of relevant experience, MS in Engineering with 6 years of relevant experience, or Ph.D. with 4 years of relevant experience

Years of Experience:

Relevant job experience of four (4) or more years, depending on education. 

Special Requirements:

o   Must have experience in food product development, from inception through commercialization, including shelf stable extruded, baked and/or retorted products

o   Demonstrated knowledge of new product development and commercialization through co-manufacturing relationships preferred, but not essential

o   Strong written, verbal and oral communication skills

o   Solid grasp of Intellectual Property principles a must

o   Working knowledge of alliance management and licensing principles a plus

o   Proven track record in building relationships and in interacting with senior executives

o   Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple simultaneous demands

o   Knowledge of Pet Food/Food technology a plus

o   Strong business and marketing acumen

o   Expertise with Microsoft Office software including Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint

o   Strong, industry-relevant technical skills and/or proven track record of acquiring proficiency in new technologies quickly

o   Approximately 30% travel required – including occasional international travel
