Job Purpose/Overview

The purpose of this role is to be the champion and guardian of Drinks Quality and Product Assurance for North America. The scope of the role covers the entire supply chain for drinks manufactured in the West Chester, PA facility. This includes West Chester Factory Quality Assurance, NA Laboratories and North American Market Unit. The job exists to ensure that the appropriate Quality Management Systems are in place that ensures the consistent high quality, safety and legality of our products and effectively applied in order to deliver high and continually improving levels of Customer / Consumer Satisfaction. This role also provides operational direction for Mars Drinks NA laboratories, laboratory standards and product technical validation. It is accountable for defining and embedding the competencies and capabilities to provide effective execution of all product validation activities required to maintain brand equity for Drinks. He/She is also responsible for the continuous improvement of Mars Drinks technical proficiency through the development of product assurance talent pipeline, the achievement and maintenance of ISO17025, and the development of governance mechanisms to ensure all products are safe, legal and defect free.


Principal Accountabilities:

  • Lead and champion the Quality & Food Safety in North America for Mars Drinks.
  • Give input to and ensure that the quality strategy is implemented at the West Chester factory & NA Market Unit (product performance, customer service & service recovery) by the management of the Quality Review Process and by leading improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure products meet specification by developing and applying appropriate quality systems throughout the drinks supply chain.
  • Manage the Product-Related Incident Management Process (PRIMP) to professionally manage all product-related quality incidents for North America and communicate outcomes clearly, internally, externally, and corporately.
  • Maintain compliance to FSSC 22000 and the Mars Corporate Quality Standards.
  • Develop pipeline quality control plans for new products manufactured at West Chester and support Research & Development to ensure that product capability can be sustained long term.
  • Ensure West Chester associates are adequately trained in the use of necessary quality tools and techniques.
  • Maintain a strong internal audits strategy in manufacturing, laboratory and NA market unit.
  • Safeguard the customer where standards are not met by initiating appropriate corrective and preventive action throughout the whole supply chain using lean and six-sigma techniques.
  • Ensure adequate quality records are kept to enable our traceability and retrieval systems to operate.
  • Uphold legal & commercial compliance to all specified standards; e.g. Labelling regulations, Kosher certification, Organics certification etc.
  • Responsible for the line management of the local product assurance organization, keeping abreast of existing consumer complaints, market environmental conditions and new industry testing methods to continuously improve Mars Drinks testing standards. Ownership of rigorous laboratory practice execution in all of Mars Drinks laboratory network- internal and external.
  • Recruit, develop and retain highly motivated product assurance team members with clear and challenging vision to improve Mars Drinks competency and talent pipeline. Pay particular attention to grow and nurture the areas of technical excellence and project delivery
  • Accountable for priorities and the allocation of resources to ensure delivery of the full plan, balancing the need for internal work versus the opportunities to outsource.
  • Apply relevant test methods for all Drinks validation for new product development, existing product maintenance or new manufacturing processes. This requires a high level of problem solving capability as the system we operate is unique to Drinks. The incumbent will need to leverage industry expertise and be fluent in problem solving tools and techniques to drive resolution of multi-dimensional complex problems.
  • Owns and maintains a strong, validated, external laboratory capability to support our business growth ambition. This includes professional laboratories and with our suppliers.
  • Deploys the Mars Drinks laboratory strategy - requiring a high level of influencing at senior levels within the business to deliver the right technical capabilities for now and future.


Context and Scope

In order to support our Global Supply and Development pipelines, this position works with global systems, measures, objectives & targets, therefore must have excellent communication skills and maintain a ‘global perspective’.  This position must be able balance Mars Standard Deployment at the factory and support the Supply team and R&D to ensure on-time and reliable leadership is provided to the business. The holder of this position is the champion for our customers and consumers and must maintain a strong customer focus.


Job Specifications/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science related field or bachelor’s degree in non-science related field with 3 years of relevant work experience in quality and food safety.
  • 3-5 years quality management experience in consumer goods industry
  • Experience in quality leadership.
  • Understanding of quality systems & advanced quality techniques.
  • Understanding of statistics & manufacturing process control.
  • Technical testing and reporting, with strong attention to detail and robust scientific approach
  • Proven experience of laboratory execution and operating in food manufacturing to international food safety standards
  • Strong organizational and influencing skills, to steer the leadership team and Mars Incorporated senior stakeholders as well as external agencies.
  • Experienced auditor in food safety and scientific environment
  • Proven ability to work effectively across functions.
  • Master’s degree preferred
