Job Summary:

The incumbent will plan and organize routine and non-routine research and development activities concerned with the chemical, biological and physical nature of food in order to evaluate and improve the quality of existing products and related processes and to develop new products and processes effectively defining and meeting key sensory attributes.  Incumbent will plan, organize and complete projects of modest scope or which are a segment of a larger project.  Will individually or with a team select and/or develop appropriate methods for conducting projects and assist in designing experiments. 

This role will interface frequently with various internal departments (i.e. Marketing, Purchasing, and Engineering) and customers in accomplishing project milestones. The incumbent will work directly with the plant’s Quality Assurance department to ensure USDA/FDA regulation compliance within the manufacturing processes.  The incumbent will prepare prototypes and line extension products using research lab, pilot lab, manufacturing facilities and equipment as required.  Typical project assignments involve product line extensions and iterative new products (i.e. modifying a customized product formula to create a new product) and support manufacturing scale-up.  The individual in this role will work independently and also with teams to develop solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope.

Incumbent, will be tasked with ordering materials for producing and evaluating prototypes, including selection and evaluation of raw materials from approved list of vendors as it relates to customers.  They will maintain accurate, up-to-date records, laboratory notebooks and the formula/spec database utilizing appropriate statistical analysis.  Incumbent will assist to design and conducts storage studies, including project and package performance under various conditions as well as sets-up, operates and maintains research lab equipment.  The role will also work and interface with outside labs, universities, ingredient suppliers and lab equipment vendors as needed by project activity.

This role will report to the Manager of Research and Development.

Responsibilities include but may not be limited to the following:

  • Oversee line tests
  • Recording of bench work
  • Work with QA to set specs on new products
  • Providing support as needed by other departments
  • Experience or ability to learn food development
  • Familiar with or ability to learn how to set up formulas
  • Ability to or learn how to bring projects from bench top to production       
  • Familiar with or ability to learn QA and set up of new products
  • Understanding of food safety and production
  • Basic knowledge of food processing
  • Flexible with the ability to work well with others
  • Computer literate (Excel, MS word, Power Point)

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • BS in Food Science/ Microbiology/ Dairy Science or Biology or related experience in lieu thereof.           
  • 1 or more years of food manufacturing experience
