This role is responsible for the overall success of the food safety compliance and quality assurance for Spokane Produce, Inc. The Food Safety Coordinator is responsible for the training, development and annual review of food safety plan. This position must have a strong work ethic, be dependable, honest, responsible and follow company policies and practices while representing the company in an ethical and professional manner.


  • Planning and developing microbiological testing program
  • Writing plant sanitation procedures
  • Ensures operations follow Good Manufacturing Procedures
  • Responsible for HACCP/Preventative Controls program, including prerequisite programs
  • Primary contact for USDA/FSIS/FDA/WSDA/DOD/WSDA-Organic personnel
  • Conducts food safety audits of facility; acts as audit guide during third party audits
  • Provides technical training to management and employees regarding the adequacy of food safety program
  • Communicates verbally to management on the level of food safety existing at the facility
  • Prepares written reports for management, recapping all issues of observations during internal audit and annual system review and, if needed, corrective actions that should be taken
  • Coordinate and assure conformance to Safe Quality Food (SQF) initiative


  • Must have one of the following:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Food Science, Agriculture or related discipline and at least four (4) years’ experience in the food industry
  • Associates degree in Sciences with six (6) years progressive experience in the food industry
  • High School Diploma / GED and ten (10) years progressive experience in the food industry
  • Must have completed HACCP training course
  • Must have completed a Food Defense training course
  • Strong knowledge of local, state and federal laws and requirements to maintain compliance with all relevant statutes and guiding principles
  • Computer literate knowledge and proficiency of MS Office
  • Record keeping, math and accounting skills
  • Experience in Auditing, Inspection and Quality Assurance
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff and management in a consistently pleasant manner
  • Able to read, write and understand policies and guidelines, specifications and safety standards in English
  • Capable of presenting a professional image of Spokane Produce, Inc. to customers, auditors and visitors


The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:

  • Food Safety and Good Manufacturing Practices, including appropriate safety equipment apply
  • While performing the duties of this position the employee may be required to sit for prolonged periods of time, climb stairs, climb ladders and walk plant floors that could exceed one mile of travel per day
  • The employee must have a full range of body movements including use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, computer equipment and peripherals; bending, reaching and crouching
  • Must have command of all five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. These vision requirements in each area must be sufficient to shift in focus from computer screens to close forms.
  • Strength: Must have the ability to lift 20 pounds with regularity
  • Requires concentration in a noisy environment
