Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance

Kent Quality Foods, a premier manufacturer of fully-cooked sausage and specialty meat products, is seeking an experienced professional for our open Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance position. Primary Purpose

Set the strategic direction for all Quality functions including organization, administration and management. Responsibilities include ensuring the company’s products are manufactured in a manner that is consistent with applicable GMPs and meet all relevant quality standards, including the company’s own high-quality standards. Leading and overseeing the company’s Analytical Lab, managing the company’s quality control and assurance programs, and establishing and maintaining appropriate quality processes, policies and standard operating procedures to achieve the company’s objectives.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Develop organizational structure and fostering talent management, including performance and succession planning.
  • Create a dynamic work environment that supports an innovative, efficient and flexible organization.
  • Foster a culture of compliance and excellence in quality throughout the company
  • Develop departmental expertise with respect to quality systems and USDA regulations
  • Develop collaborative and strong working relationships across the company
  • Develop and coordinate the Quality Control laboratory activities and capabilities to provide timely, accurate compliant testing of raw materials, in-process materials.
  • Guide the Quality Control team to ensure the company has robust product stability programs for domestic and international products.
  • Oversee the approval of all specifications, procedures and formulas that impact the strength, quality, purity, and efficacy of manufactured and contract-manufactured products.
  • Ensures the proper investigation into the root cause of product and/or process failures, and assists in determining appropriate product disposition and/or process improvements.
  • Ensures any external laboratories used by the company comply with GLP standards.
  • Interfaces with Sales, Marketing, Procurement, Manufacturing, R&D and Program Management teams to help ensure the successful launch of new products.
  • Collaborates with R&D and/or outside contract labs to ensure seamless method validation and transfer.
  • Establishes and manages the Quality budget and provides periodic forecast updates consistent with business operating plans and requirements.
  • Guides the activities of the Quality Assurance and Supplier Assurance groups to ensure compliance with applicable GMPs, GLP and HACCP, and all relevant quality standards.
  • Oversees the quality evaluation and approval of raw material suppliers and contract manufacturers and outside laboratories

Qualifications

  • Requires a BS degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology or related sciences. Advanced degree preferred.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Auditor preferred.
  • Requires eight to twelve years’ experience in food or pharmaceutical industry that includes a minimum of five years managerial experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a collaborative environment with a positive leadership style and a hands-on approach that emphasizes team work, influencing, motivating, and consensus building
  • A strategic thinker with strong business acumen
  • A critical thinker with strong deductive reasoning and decision-making skills
  • A comprehensive knowledge of chemical and microbial analysis, manufacturing operations, sanitation, GMP’s and GLP’s and the theories and general principles behind them.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of compliance with GMP regulations, Food Manufacturing, federal and state safety requirements.
  • An understanding and experience with all relevant microbiological testing, methods development/validation and environmental monitoring programs required to meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving skills utilizing standard problem-solving methodologies
  • Strong project management skills
