The Neil Jones Food Company, Purveyors of superior quality, fresh packed California tomatoes and Northwest fruit, headquartered in Vancouver, Washington seeks a Food Scientist to join our Toma-Tek based team in Firebaugh, California. The Neil Jones Food Company is a well-established privately held food Manufacturing Company with manufacturing facilities in the states of California and Washington.
The Food Scientist will be responsible for the development of new products and processes, and the reformulation of products to improve quality, processing efficiency, and ingredient cost. The position must handle multiple projects, adhere to project timelines, and organize workloads while maintaining accurate, detailed documentation of tasks and results. The position interacts with all levels of the organization and routinely works with industry professionals, customers, vendors, competitors, auditors, and other third parties.
Execute the assigned R&D projects.
Develop new products from concept to bench-top samples, to test batches, and to successful start-ups and productions.
Develop and maintain accurate records of laboratory work on paper and in computers, including formula, ingredients used, and cooking/processing procedures.
Reformulate products for cost saving or change processes to improve process efficiency.
Qualify alternate ingredient suppliers for cost saving and / quality improvement.
Participate in daily product evaluation and testing in the laboratory.
Establish new product specifications to provide effective production flow and quality products while meeting customer requirements.
Conduct shelf life studies for selected new and existing products.
Develop nutritional information for labeling and packaging.
Perform all duties in accordance with Safety and Food Safety Regulations.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
Maintain confidentiality in all areas of responsibility.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge in acidified food processing and regulations.
Understanding of general food chemistry and food processing.
Knowledge in the use of various spices and food ingredients and their interactions in food systems.
Experience in using data trace software to monitor thermal process.
Ability in basic material/mass balance calculations with strong mathematical skills.
Experience in using Genesis R&D program to generate nutrition information for labeling.
Ability to operate a computer and supporting software – Windows and MS Office.
Ability to operate various analytical instruments and tools in a food processing lab.
Effective verbal and written communication skills including proper use of grammar.
Well-developed interpersonal and team-building skills.
Strong work ethics and professionalism.
Experience in managing multiple projects and supervising people.
Strong problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
Ability to determine cause of action through investigative initiatives and strong reasoning.
Ability to work in a seasonal environment that runs 24/7 for approximately 90 days (mid-July to mid-October).
Education & Experience:
Bachelor of Science (graduate degree preferred) in Food Science, Food Engineering, or related fields.
3 - 5 years of product and process development experience, preferably in the development and processing of tomatoes and tomato-based products.
Experience in a manufacturing setting.
Encourage and support further education.
Office, industrial kitchen, and laboratory environment for product development.
Manufacturing plant environment that may be subject to warmer temperatures during the summer process season.
Requires periods of standing, walking and climbing.
5 days a week work environment (with occasional 6th day required for new product startups, test packs, etc. primarily during the summer fresh pack season).
Variable work schedules required at times.
