SUMMARY: This position will play an important role in overseeing the supervision, monitoring, and implementation of all quality, food safety and micro functions at Newbern. The person in this position must have an adequate network of contacts to accomplish the objectives of this position. The following will be the primary responsibilities of this position: Supervision of Quality Assurance activities in all plant areas that are impacted by the in-plant programs in the continuous improvement process. Implementation and continuous improvement of in-plant programs. Compilation and review of data for trends and deviations followed by reporting execution (with operations) of corrective and preventive measures. Shared ownership with Operations management of product or processing issues. Supervise accountability to the front line, ensuring immediate reaction and resolution to situations. Execution of Hillshire Brands programs as appropriate with feedback on continuous improvement. Manage process and program improvement to help meet Hillshire Brands/Newbern Operations goals. (i.e.yields, micro standards, ect.) Ensure QA staff is directly involved in attaining company goals and "Standards of Performance" Actively participate in new product and new process development and implementation. Work through issues with operations, collectively as a team. Teach and use "root cause" analysis. Develop corrective and preventative measures with operations. Provide follow-up on resolution of customer complaints. Maintain measurement systems, process control programs and auditing processes, as tools to verify that customer expectations are being met. Channel customer feedbackto appropriate levels on the plant floor. Share expectations and knowledge of why issues are truly problems. Implement continuous improvement in measurement systems. Supervision of Quality Assurance staff. Ensure that a consistent understanding of quality is followed. Ensure that a consistent understanding of product specifications exists and are followed. Educate QA staff on programs, policies and processes. Ensure process change notification is effective and changes are implemented. Foster communications skills. Develop candidates for succession. Provide effective, consistent feedback, ensuring accountability for actions and results. Develop and maintain professional relationships with internal customers andwith the USDA personnel. Recognize needs of QA organization and balance with those of the broader organization. Assist in educating other groups within the organization of the roles and responsibilities of QA. Teach, support and reinforceteamwork. Understand government regulations and manage programs and processes to meet and/or exceed these regulations. A trained designee will be appointed by plant management to cover for absences or vacancies. REQUIREMENTS: Education: A B.S. in Biology, Food and/or Meat Science with emphasis in food science related courses is preferred. Experience: Minimum of 2-5 years' experience in meat industry management. Knowledge in Basic & Advanced HACCP, Plant SSOP's, GMP's, USDA Regulations-Notices-Directives, Humane Handling and SQF. Computer Skills: Standard computer skills including generating simple letters, spreadsheets and /or graphics for personal business use or creating simple queries and simply formatted data output and input. Prefer computer knowledge/experience in the following programs: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook programs. Communication Skills: Excellent communication, verbal and written skills with all levels of management.  INTERNAL APPLICANTS: Must not have 5 or more attendance occurrences. Must not have a Final Written Warning or Suspension on file within the past 6 months. Must have been in current position for a minimum of 6 months.
