Internship

Position: Research & Development Intern – Product Data

Duration: 10-12 weeks: Target Mid June 2017-Mid Sept 2017 (Extension of duration subject to review)

Hours Per Week: 24-32 hours per week. This is subject to change based on workload.

Role s Summary

You are a go-getter who loves food, food science, and has the desire to learn more about the inner workings of the food and beverage business. In addition, you are reliable, self-motivated, have a positive attitude.

As part of a growing company and collaborative R&D, QA, and operations teams, you will be integral to the continued smooth functioning of diverse teams in the lab, production, and office environments.

You will assist with work in two main areas of food science.

The first area (where you will likely spend about 65% of your of time) will be focused on ensuring the accuracy and organization of important product data. This work will cover areas such as product specifications, labels, documentation, and even some regulatory compliance!

The second area you will have exposure to will include shelf life studies, product tastings, and writing up summaries. You will also gain knowledge and perspective as you observe an onsite beverage production facility.

This experience will help you build a solid foundation on your budding career in the food industry!

Key Categories of Success

Food Science: eager to build upon book learnings with real world experience. You will make a meaningful contribution to the R&D department by helping us run some of the Day-to-Day business in the office and the Lab.

Below are examples of common tasks, and projects you will help us with. Other projects may be added as they come up.

  • Input accurate product and ingredient data into an existing system and template [Oracle Product Lifecycle Management (“PLM”) software]
  • Review and proof product, ingredient and packaging documents
  • Write summaries of product tests and processes using existing templates
  • Input and maintain nutritional information into the database
  • Perform analytical analyses on ingredients and products (pH, Brix, viscosity)
  • Assist with setting up and conducting product shelf life studies and sensory tests
  • Some bench top formula preparation
  • General lab and office maintenance and organization

Communication: Listen, ask questions for team support, and ask for clarification when needed.

Attention to Detail and Documentation: Create and maintain accurate and organized records—this is one of the foundation of a good R&D department!

Computer Skills: Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook; Power Point a Plus. Genesis Nutritional database a Plus

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have taken at least 3 upper division college level courses in Food Science (or related discipline)
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, Outlook, and Powerpoint
  • Live in SF Bay area or willing to relocate at own expense
  • Able to work at least 30 hours per week during normal business hours (M-F 8a-5p)
  • Available to work from 6/15/17-9/15/17
  • (preferred not required) able to extend internship beyond 9/15/17
  • Eligible to work in the US without sponsorship
  • Fluent in verbal & written English
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
