We are currently searching for a Food Safety Specialist Consultant to support the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze scientific trends; conduct data analysis; and coordinate with other Food Safety staff on the production of reports and other written materials.
  • Promote and maintain communications with USDA agencies and other federal departments in order to anticipate and respond to their information needs and requirements.
  • Assist the Nutrition and Food Safety Program (NFSP) Leader in identifying opportunities for the expansion and continued development of the Food Safety Research Information Office (FSRIO) program. Organize statistical and technical information on food safety, and identify new and emerging trends. Assist in writing proposals for new projects and reviews and reacts critically to new proposals, new projects, surveys and studies regarding policies, programs, systems, services, standards and procedures.
  • Cultivate and sustain effective working relationships with others within the Library. Share information and expertise with colleagues and mentor new staff. Work collaboratively both inside and outside National Agricultural Library (NAL).
  • Support management of the FSRIO Research Projects Database, including assessment of research projects and publications. Work collaboratively with IT liaison on database developments.


Specific Tasks:

Information and Collection Management . Gather, evaluate and assess new and existing food safety resources and materials for FSRIO’s databases, websites, and services. Select and review project and publications for inclusion in NAL web sites and/or in various databases.

Trend Reporting and Analysis. Identify and evaluate food safety research and data for collection and analysis. Analyze trends and create opportunities for program development. Strategize, plan and implement reports and publications showcasing data from the National Agricultural Library, specifically related to food safety.

Program Assessment. Apply both qualitative and quantitative research methods to assess the food safety environment, and also to inform future program development. Prepare strategic plans with anticipated outcomes. Incorporate the research and development process to support program development.

Reference Service . Support requests for information in specific areas related to food safety in a variety of formats. Use standardized procedures to search NAL and other databases to obtain reports of completed research, and data on ongoing projects.

Outreach/Promotion. Supports outreach for food safety program to target audiences locally and nationally through social media, traditional media, partnership development, conference participation, educational, Internet, and other relevant information systems. Identify ways to promote new research and analytic reports from the Library to target audiences.

Qualifications & Knowledge Requirements:

  • Degree in food safety/food science with at least 3 years of experience leading projects.
  • Experience with database management and web development.
  • An understanding and experience with the research process and information flow in the food safety research community including knowledge of data collection, evaluation, and analysis methods needed to synthesize comments from users and conceptualize, plan and evaluate information programs, products and services.
  • Skill in preparing analytical reports and other written documents presenting facts, issues, and recommendations.
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage projects, operations and resources.
  • Ability to organize thoughts and to express them clearly and concisely in both written and oral communication.

Preferences:

  • Master degree in food safety/food science
  • Broad professional knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of food safety/food science.
