Director of Plant Operations

What you will do:

The Director of Plant Operations is responsible to coordinate and oversee all manufacturing and converting operations at the Boardman Cheese and Whey production sites. This position provides the vision, leadership, and coaching needed to develop and maintain the competencies, performance, and collaboration of departmental employees in production, engineering, and quality assurance.

  Here’s a day in the life:

  • Ensure the establishment and maintenance of a strong safety culture within the plant and that a safe work environment is maintained for all employees
  • Uncompromising in promoting and following all company safety guidelines
  • Familiar with the safety requirements of regulatory agencies including OSHA, OR-OSHA
  • Understands local safety plans concerning hazardous chemicals including ammonia (PSM)
  • Insures that an evacuation plan is updated and trained on as prescribed
  • Ensure food safety and quality compliance with USDA, OSDA, FDA, and other regulatory agencies
  • Audit and approve work instructions that reflect compliance with food safety and quality
  • Audit manufacturing quality control point testing and measures
  • Implement plans to correct any problems that are identified, determine where and why the problem occurred, and oversee specific corrective action
  • Develop a manufacturing organization in Boardman capable of producing desired business results for the production of premium quality cheese, and whey.
  • Provides coaching and mentoring to all direct reports
  • Establishes, monitors, and reviews individual and team performance
  • Accountable for establishing, communicating, and reporting on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for manufacturing at Boardman.
  • Schedules and conducts plant leadership team meetings on a regular basis
  • Establish effective working relationships with all support departments and other Tillamook locations
  • Facilitate and maintain an effective working relationship with QA and Engineering
  • Interface and collaborate with multiple departments including sales, supply chain, HR, and finance
  • Maintain effective communications with other Tillamook manufacturing locations with an eye toward continuous improvement and consistency
  • Responsible for developing budgets and authorizing expenditures within approved department budgets including: Labor (staff count/wages), department materials/supplies, recommend and develop capital budget needs
  • Accountable for establishing and maintaining a culture of continuous improvement
  • Provide the time, tools, and training needed for employee development
  • Model the behavior expected from the plant teams
  • Promote, celebrate, and communicate wins
  • Define and monitor standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Establish manufacturing quality control point testing and measures
  • Implement plans to correct any problems that are identified, determine where and why the problem occurred, and oversee specific corrective action
  • Review the previous day’s production and laboratory reports for items produced
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors and the general public.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Utilize a computer with basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
  • Act as a team player and be able to interact with staff at all levels of the company.
  • Work under pressure, meet deadlines, and be flexible in working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrate excellent time-management skills with the ability to work independently with little supervision.

Skills you’ll need:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or Business Management; or 8 – 12 years of dairy manufacturing experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
