Eastern Carolina Organics, a wholesale organic produce distributor based in Durham, NC, is seeking a stellar Quality Assurance & Food Safety Manager to strengthen our existing program and ensure that quality and food safety imperatives are effectively implemented. This role establishes and enforces receiving protocols; ensures proper processes are followed consistent with industry, food safety, traceability, and organic handling standards; and communicates preventative and real-time feedback to suppliers, sales, and procurement staff to improve ECO’s success.

The QA Manager is expected to bring a working knowledge of produce quality requirements and to provide thorough and timely communication regarding inbound product quality, storage, shelf life and packaging issues, food safety, customer prioritization due to quality issues, and opportunities for improvement regarding production-based or post-harvest handling techniques to enhance product quality.

The Quality Assurance Manager manages the Quality Hold, GMP, and pest control programs, and employee training in these areas. This individual directs a team of two quality technicians and ensures that routine quality and food safety checks are executed in alignment with company SOPs. This position plays a leadership role in implementation of QA compliance system to assure food safety meets the requirements of ECO’s Primus GFS program.

The right candidate will be detail-oriented and demonstrate the desire and ability to plan, organize, and direct quality assurance personnel and programs to assure that all products conform to company-defined product quality standards, as well as Federal, State, and local standards of product identity, safety, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in a supervisory or team leader role.
  • Expertise in USDA grade standards, defects, and tolerances.
  • Keen attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Superior work ethic with willingness to work extended and flexible hours seasonally.
  • Ability to provide effective solutions-oriented communication to a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the areas of fresh-cut produce, produce food safety, quality, and/or organics.
  • Strong knowledge of organic handling and food safety requirements, food labeling, and traceability industry standards.
  • Training in HACCP, USDA NOP, FSMA, GMPs, GAPs, and SSOPs.
  • Valid driver's license/warehouse safety and forklift training.
  • Demonstrated computing skills using business software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Quickbooks, Google Drive, and others.
  • Experience evaluating technical documents and/or basic laboratory technique.
  • Self-motivation and creativity, with critical thinking and idea integration skills.
  • Resilience in a rapidly changing environment.
  • A positive attitude and a sense of humor.
  • Belief in, and support of, the company mission and program.
