Overview

Primal Nutrition, LLC is looking for a full-time Quality Assurance Specialist. Primal Nutrition sells high-end food products under the Primal Kitchen brand, and high-end vitamin supplements and health education material. This position reports to the Director of QA & Innovation and primarily supports the growing food and supplement line of Primal Nutrition products.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Quality Assurance programs for Primal Nutrition’s growing portfolio of food products (Primal Kitchen) and dietary supplements (Primal Blueprint), including shelf-stable mayonnaise, dressings, sauces, ketchup, mustard, avocado oils, collagen and protein bars, collagen and whey protein powders.
  • Innovation – assist in project management, ingredient research and formulation assistance, team sensory tastings, UPC creation/management, comprehensive packaging/label development/revisions.
  • Oversight of comanufacturers for quality compliance, including on-site visits for production runs and/or audits as needed. Evaluation/management of COAs and quality documents.
  • Support FDA compliance with programs/documentation for FSMA. Develop SOPs and product specifications.
  • Support management of certifications (e.g. Non-GMO Project, Organic, CA Dept of Health)
  • Manage lab testing of ingredients and finished products for micro and chemical analysis, shelf life studies, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support Sales/Marketing with new item set-up and certificates/technical documents
  • Assist in answering customer questions/complaints.
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • A self-starter with a minimum 5 years of hands-on Food Manufacturing QA experience in a GMP environment. Working knowledge of FDA requirements for food. Aptitude for research, food safety, and natural foods.
  • Experienced in product development, manufacturing, quality audits, and commercialization of food and dietary supplements.
  • High attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to multitask and adapt to quickly changing priorities across multiple projects.
  • Strong writing, analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking. Skilled communicator with suppliers and comanufacturers.
  • Strong follow-through, integrity, and sound judgment.
  • Adept at working independently and cross-functionally, managing multiple projects and short timelines, and working in fast-paced environment. Able to communicate and manage project needs cross-functionally.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and web-based spec development and customer set-up portals
  • FSMA certifications preferred - Certified PCQI practitioner and FSVP qualified individual through FSPCA accredited courses
  • GFSI training (e.g. SQF or BRC) preferred

Key Competencies

  • Experienced in food manufacturing, product development, and food safety. Familiar with FSMA and GFSI audit requirements.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Highly detail oriented with strong self-motivation

Education/Work Experience

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Food Science, Nutrition, or closely related discipline required
  • 5+ years food industry manufacturing, innovation, and/or quality experience, preferably including co-manufacturing relationships

Travel Requirements

Approximately 25-45% travel

Primary location is remote home office. Prefer Southern California.
