Food Safety Associate Manager

This remote role for Red Robin will manage restaurant food safety programs and provide support and guidance to restaurants, regional leadership in the areas of food safety and sanitation to improve and drive the Red Robin food safety culture. Work with Red Robin's third party auditing partner and Food Safety team to ensure consistency among audits. Act as Red Robin's advocate during interaction with regulatory agencies (local health departments, FDA, USDA, DOA, CFIA). Work to continuously improve and strengthen food safety and workplace safety at Red Robin by collaborating with internal teams and external resources.


  • Work cross-functionally with Quality & Commercialization, Food & Beverage, Culinary, Operations, Learning & Development, Construction and Design, Risk Management, marketing and Facilities teams as a food safety subject matter expert to provide effective and efficient food safety support & guidance against enterprise objectives and timelines
  • Develop, contribute and assist in the development, evaluation, improvement, and implementation of Red Robin's food safety policies, procedures, standards, and manuals
  • Partner with operations teams to support restaurants by reviewing restaurant performance history, conducting on site visits and providing guidance, coaching, education and follow up around food safety and sanitation standards with a focus on building a food safety culture.
  • Maintain and review food safety and sanitation trends at the restaurant level, regional and divisional level to provide support and implement process improvements by communicating key information across all levels of the organization.
  • Apply restaurant HACCP principles to recipes, processes and procedures to identify risks and develop methods to reduce risks while implementing top tier food safety standards to protect the Guests and the Brand.
  • Write and maintain menu specific HACCP plans for regulatory approval.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement solutions to assure that restaurant practices and store designs meet local health regulations and food safety standards.
  • Design and monitor Red Robin's internal food safety auditing program while providing training, technical expertise and coaching for the program.
  • Provide accurate and timely information and communication to the field and leadership on new standards, SOP changes, audit training, award winners, process updates and procedure changes.
  • Build SOPs for all restaurant processes and procedures such as cleaning and sanitation, chemical handling, food handling, allergy program updates, line checks and pest management.
  • Maintain and review pest reports at the restaurant level and provide support, guidance, coaching and decision making while collaborating with our pest provider. Escalate and bring in departments to assist when necessary.
  • Manage crisis situations by speaking as the food safety subject matter expert on events including: foodborne illness escalations, foreign object complaints, allergic reactions, pest infestations, water interruption and power outages, sewage backups, fire and other emergency events
  • Research food safety innovation, opportunities and implement technology improvements to ensure and maximize food safety while advancing the Brand in the marketplace.
  • Provide education and certification to restaurants for Certified Manager Food Safety Training requirements. This includes providing Servsafe training to home office staff.
  • Collect, review, and evaluate scientific data to make recommendations for food safety process improvements, cost savings, Guest protection and Brand elevation.
  • Daily monitoring and surveillance of key food safety and sanitation indicators including pest management, foodborne illness complaints, health department reports, internal audit scores, Guest complaints.
  • Proactively target the lowest performing 10% of restaurants, set up field visits and show measurable improvement in those regions after support.
  • Actively participate with food safety and regulatory associations on behalf of Red Robin
  • Ongoing surveillance of health department inspections, identifying and escalating potential issues in a timely manner, intervene and manage high risk issues with restaurant operations.
  • Observe and train on workplace safety and OSHA opportunities in the restaurant that could lead to Guest or Team Member injury or loss.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum 5 years food safety experience working in restaurant food safety, or restaurant health inspection, or food safety auditing in a restaurant environment
  • Bachelor's degree with technical background in Environmental Health, Food Science, Biology, Microbiology, or food safety related course of study or equivalent experience.
  • Strong applied knowledge of restaurant food safety and competent with knowledge of up-to-date food safety practices
  • Applied knowledge of HACCP, SSOPs, GMPs, FDA and all other applicable State and Local health and food safety codes and the principles behind these requirements affecting restaurants
  • Knowledge of restaurant operations from a food safety perspective
  • Ability to investigate food safety and quality complaints
  • Ability to manage product recalls, foodbourne illness situations, and interface with regulatory authorities (health departments, FDA, USDA, and CDC).
  • Knowledge of food microbiology
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, and must be able to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to travel, up to 40%.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused during crisis situations.
  • Be able to use industry resources to seek knowledge and solve problems.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams to drive solutions
