Food Traceability and Technology Scientist

The Scientist will broadly support the prioritized strategic initiatives of the Institute of Food Technologists whose mission is to advance the science of food and its application across the global food system. He/she will be responsible for the collection, analysis and application of qualitative and quantitative grant-based research and development on behalf of IFT’s Global Food Traceability Center (GFTC) across its processes, initiatives and product offerings. The Scientist will be responsible for serving as an internal and external subject matter expert on traceability and related technologies. The Scientist will work within the SPI team and across the organization as a partner on science and policy initiatives in a cross-functional environment working closely with the Chicago office.

Essential Responsibilities

Working directly with the Director of Food Safety Programs and VP of SPI to execute programming initiatives and plan primary and secondary research data requirements to support GFTC

Lead the execution of GFTC’s grant activities related to traceability, technology and interoperability

Manage grant data collection efforts, analyze and present results to staff, leadership, members and other groups

Research and develop traceability best practices for planning, monitoring and requirements collection and analysis, including tools and training for stakeholders and leadership in public and private sectors

Identify future research needs in food traceability and seek grant funding through proposals and concept papers to help fill those needs

Partner with GFTC’s advisory council for new program development and execution

Collaborate closely with sales, marketing, communications, publications and membership teams to enhance value of GFTC to members

Ability to work collaboratively across institutions that partner with GFTC on grant work

Experience Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Food Science or related area required

Advanced degree in related field preferred

Minimum three years’ professional experience

Ability to work with multiple data sets and using technology to analyze it

Proven successes in managing a variety of assignments simultaneously while maintaining close attention to detail

Proven experience in anticipating the needs of managers and working to innovate processes and procedures to create efficiencies

Experience developing tools, training and best practices to be used by public and private sector stakeholders

Skill Requirements

Superior written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrated advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of products

Strict attention to detail

High degree of rapid responsiveness and customer-centric attitude

Experience working in a diverse, international environment with key clients/customers/partners from a variety of countries and cultural backgrounds with sensitivity and awareness

Manager Skill Requirements

Work Conditions

Moderate travel may be required (up to 50%)

Sitting for extended periods of time

Ability operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other office equipment
