Espuna LLC is a Gloversville, NY based subsidiary of the family owned Spanish food manufacturing company Esteban Espuna S.A. The history of Espuña dates back to 1947, when Esteve Espuña began producing sausages using traditional recipes in his farmhouse near Olot, Spain. Today Espuña has state of the art facilities that serve customers in more than 40 countries.

Espuna LLC has been in operation in NY for approximately two years and as it has been growing more employment and career development opportunities have arisen.

SCOPE

The Quality and Food Safety Coordinator, reporting to plant manager, is responsible for ensuring that the plant is following all the health and safety procedures in place. Also it is responsible for setting up new procedures to continuously improve the safety of our products.

It is a new position in the organization and will be key in growing our business.

RESPONSABILITIES

  • HACCP Compliance (Critical Control points monitoring, labeling guidelines, export certificate, etc)
  • Basic lab work (Sample analysis)
  • Facility Inspections
  • Performs quality control and maintain documentation for our suppliers
  • Maintains Food Safety files and paperwork
  • Monitor sanitation efforts to identify trends and process issues, consult on corrective actions when needed
  • Be a plant representative to the USDA and other regulatory agencies, while ensuring compliance to GMP standards, USDA and other regulatory requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out the job duties; typically includes expertise in the field of agriculture and/or food safety
  • Experience in food; meat or poultry processing: raw and RTE
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems independently and with sound judgment
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate accuracy, thoroughness and dependability
  • Ability to be detail oriented, flexible, organized, creative, independent enthusiastic, dependable and driven by excellence
  • Establishes and maintains effective channels of communications with internal and external contacts
  • Adjusts tasks and focus in accordance with changing deadlines and priorities

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS or MS in Food Science, Meat Science, Microbiology or related field and a minimum of 5 years of experience in a quality position
  • Basic lab experience
  • Experience working in SAP is desired
  • Basic Spanish (headquarter quality department speak fluent English, but older documentation might be in Spanish)

SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

  • Knowledge and understanding of food safety, HACCP systems, USDA regulatory requirements; sanitary design of equipment/facility.
  • Understanding of ready-to-eat product shelf life and meat microbiology
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Project management and team leadership skills

WORKING CONDITION:

  • Environment: Office work around 40% of the time, approximately 30% inside the facility doing inspection, approximately 30% of the time in the lab (in a separate location 10 minute drive)
  • Physical demands – Frequently sit, reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stand and walk; grasp with hands and fingers; and lift up to 20 pounds. Occasionally bend, twist, push, pull, climb, squat, crawl & kneel.
  • Machines, tools and equipment - Frequently use computer, writing instruments, incubator, stomacher and autoclave.
