The Food/Formulation Scientist will ensure product and project specifications; scope and budget parameters are met on time; first time through applied research, ingredients, formulation, and process technology development for ongoing analytical studies and performs basic statistical analysis of scientific findings. The Scientist will develop protocols for research studies and evaluates alternate methodologies to be used, and conducts/analyzes research studies for formulating liquid concentrates and or drinks from lipophilic compounds. The Scientist will work between several locations including, but not limited to Utica, NY; Sparks, NV; Palm Desert, CA; and Los Angeles, CA.

  • Developed new products spanning the food and beverage industry from all stages: concept development, formulation to commercialization
  • Strong working knowledge of experimental design & product development protocols (from concept to execution), including formulation, stability testing, product/package interaction, sensory and consumer testing methodology
  • Lead development and approval of product design specifications, food safety & quality standards and manufacturing process parameters
  • Conducts laboratory research in accordance with stipulated protocols and quality and safety standards.
  • Prepares and maintains research findings, summaries, logs and notes, and develops statistical results of research.
  • Reviews publications and databanks for new research findings and correlates with laboratory research findings in participating studies.
  • Remains abreast of laboratory analytical applications to include changes/enhancements in research studies, laboratory technology and research standards.
  • Prepares research findings and supporting data for peer journal publication, oral presentation, or other dissemination and archiving.
  • Provide regular updates to cross functional teams in a concise format to include status, challenges, issue resolution and ensure success of the programs
  • Communicate early in project to management any concerns regarding the jeopardy of a new productís committed ship date as well as jeopardy of meeting product requirements/specifications.
  • Manage the end to end reporting of projects from top level to dive deep views on critical milestones.
  • Oversee weekly discussions on technical aspects in manufacturing calls and internal product development meetings.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This position works in a laboratory that contains potent chemicals. Employees are required to wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment when handling these materials.

Ability to taste and screen various products and ingredients for flavor and sensory evaluation without dietary limitations.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Expected days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, Employee work hours are from 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. each weekday and any additional hours required to completes projects in a timely manner and meet timelines.


Home office is based in the greater Los Angeles area with 75% traveling outside of California.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelorís degree in Food Science.
  • 5 yearsí experience conducting new product development and formulation. Stability testing and analysis, or a masterís degree and a minimum of one year of investigative research and analysis
  • Assist in creation and execution of departmental SOPís
  • 3+ yearsí experience in R&D, Product Development, or Sensory Science
  • Developed brand formula development, optimization for food safety, new ingredient evaluation and procurement, chemical and physical stability studies, leveraging external suppliers and supporting complex consumer studies.
  • Additional experience with raw materials/ingredients, quality assurance, and regulatory experience are also a plus.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Certification in a related specialty.
  • Masterís Degree in Food Science
  • 6 Sigma and/or PMP practices
  • Developed and commercialized multiple shelf-stable liquid concentrate beverages
  • Led product development, analytical support, and training of plant employees during qualification of new Liquid Concentrate manufacturing line
  • Developed new products spanning the food and beverage industry from all stages: concept development, formulation to commercialization

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • A working knowledge of biological laboratory safety precautions and protocols for safe handling and the disposal of hazardous agents and re-agents, chemicals and materials.
  • Excellent writing and statistical skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and computer software skills using research-based applications.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

No Hi-B sponsorship. Completion and successful passing of Background and Drug Screen.
