The Regulatory & Nutrition Senior Specialist is responsible for providing regulatory and labeling compliance services to internal and external PetAg customers, maintain the ingredient and formula nutrition database, and support Product Development and Quality team members. This specialist ensures that all forms of labeling are developed in accordance with various international, federal, and state guidelines and policies.


1.    Review and consult on finished product labels for milk replacers, treats, supplements, and grooming products. This includes pack copy and all other forms of label copy, product information materials, social media, and sales and trade show materials to ensure regulatory compliance to international, federal and state regulations, requirements, and policies. Provide consultation for deficiencies, updates or corrections to address compliance. Regulations and policies include US-FDA, USDA and Health Canada CFIA, and AAFCO.

2.    Review and ensure compliance on all mandatory aspects of finished product labels including Ingredient Statements, Guaranteed Analyses, Active and Inactive Ingredients, Claims, Mfg/Dist and Country of Origin compliance, etc..

3.    Provide regulatory consultation by reviewing documents and other materials to substantiate labeling accuracy and claims. 

4.    Develop and provide technical information to customers as needed.

5.    Review formulas to ensure meeting requirements for classification as feed, food or supplement.

6.    Address emerging regulatory issues pertaining to food labeling and ensure compliance with current and evolving regulations and ensure PetAg Regulatory and Nutrition Services meet changing needs and requirements

7.    As necessary, collaborate with and communicate cross functionally regarding current and emerging food labeling issues and opportunities

8.    Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current pet food and supplement labeling regulations and guidelines, regulatory activity and trends.  Attend webinars and conferences as necessary to stay current in regulatory knowledge.

9.    Works on company cross-functional regulatory projects as needed

10. Define and provide nutrition profiles of ingredients and finished products using nutrition databases (e.g. ESHA Food Processor)

11. Support Product Development and Quality team activities as needed



Education: Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Animal Nutrition or related field


Experience: At least 2 years of related work experience preferred (Food Regulatory Compliance, Food Labeling & Animal Nutrition) with food regulations (FDA, USDA, Canadian, AAFCO), nutrient composition databases, and nutrition science


Preferred Qualifications: 

·         Experience working with food regulations (FDA, USDA, Canadian, AAFCO), nutrient composition databases, and nutrition science.

·         Working knowledge of food product development and processes preferred.

·         High level of understanding of food safety and GMP’s.

·         Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

·         Ability to develop, communicate and then meet project timelines.

·         Strong skills in both leadership and team work.

·         Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

·         Strong problem solving & critical thinking skills.

·         Comfortable in a fast-paced dynamic culture.

·         Strong mathematical skills.

·         Strong computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

·         Interest in animals and their nutrition and welfare.
