Research Scientist- Chemical Food Safety - Saint Louis, MO
Main purpose of job:
This position will serve as NPTC contact point for chemical contaminant management related activities for raw material ingredients used in pet food products and will act as lead for communications to the global markets on chemical contaminant surveillance activities and application/interpretation of laboratory results. Working in collaboration with cross functional teams, this position will evaluate new ingredients proposed for pet food products, documenting use restrictions, HACCP chemical food safety standards and any limitations needed to assure safety of products. A basic knowledge of nutrition is required. Works under minimal supervision and in close collaboration with the Veterinary Toxicologist.
Provide expertise and leadership on Chemical Food Safety issues concerning potential contaminants in raw materials and packaging used for pet food products.
Evaluate new ingredients proposed for pet food products and litter products to assure animal safety.
Act as contact for questions concerning potential contaminants in pet food products, including but not limited to mycotoxins, pesticides, heavy metals, environmental contaminants, natural toxins and process contaminants.
Using available data and reports from the scientific literature, evaluate potential contaminants in raw material ingredients used in pet food products for possible adverse effects in pet animals. Using a risk assessment approach, develop guidelines and/or limits for potential contaminants in raw material ingredients and final products to assure safety.
Communicate information on potential contaminants by written Briefs.
Work closely with HACCP teams for development of standards or limits for contaminants as part of HACCP process.
Provide leadership and coordination of contaminant management related activities for Purina global markets.
Provide training to quality managers and other teams as needed for chemical food safety and the utilization of analytical results database in HACCP decision-making process.
Assist quality, technical and public relations teams in responding to consumer or media concerns on potential contamination issues concerning pet food products.
Provide support for early warning activities
Stay current with the state of the art analytical methods used for contaminant testing
Attend appropriate continuing education venues to maintain and expand expertise in this area.
- Conduct all activities in compliance with all required company policies and procedures
- Actively practice safety in the workplace
- Travel as required
- Additional duties as assigned by supervisor
DVM with PhD in toxicology or closely related health science field preferred.
Solid foundation in toxicology, pharmacology or physiology as applied to animals.
