Position Summary:

This position is responsible for new product and process development of biological prototypes and products in the food and beverage industry. Furthermore responsible for providing technical and application support to new and existing customers on current product lines and development prototypes.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Execute cell culture process development and optimization experiments using various fermentation vessels such as shake flasks and bench scale reactors which includes equipment set up and sterilization; media preparation and sterilization; aseptic microbial strain maintenance and handling; inoculation protocols; fermentation control and sampling; equipment cleanup and basic maintenance
  • Perform experimental design, execution, and data analysis
  • Support early pilot and process development in micro-organism development
  • Analyze new microbiological and other development samples for quality, performance and sensory characteristics
  • Conceptual and product development ideas in the microbiological areas for beverage segment
  • Lead and/ or support other R&D projects related to fermentation and beverage markets as needed
  • Provide applications support to internal and external business partners, particularly customers, by explaining via phone, e-mail or an in-person how the products and services that Gusmer provides are applied, particularly in the customer processes
  • Generate documentation to support new product development efforts including ideation, technical reports, standard operating procedures, customer support presentations, etc.
  • Manage independent and/or team projects with regular updates including periodic project reviews or reports
  • Support sensory testing of customer or internal projects in the beverage area, conducting trials, participating in tastings and analyzing data.


  • BS/MS in fermentation science, biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, biotechnology, life sciences, or related field
  • Have solid hands-on experience with bench-scale fermentation platforms, analytical laboratory procedures and statistical data evaluation
  • Sound understanding of basic fermentation microbiology, fermentation kinetics and familiarity with culturing, aseptic and microbiological plating techniques
  • Ability to create and develop new ideas into actionable plans for new product and process prototypes
  • Strong communication, multi-tasking and organizational skills required
  • Team player, strong people skills, self-motivated and ability to work without direct supervision a must
  • Previous experience in beverage sensory analyses a plus
  • Basic project management skills preferred

Working Conditions:

This position typically functions in a laboratory, office, and production environment including 20% travel by car and plane which includes some overnight travel. Working environment includes exposure to moderate to high noise levels, fumes, dust, chemicals, and allergens. This position may require tasting alcoholic beverages for sensory evaluation purposes in R&D and/or customer site
