Oversee the operation of the laboratory. Oversee the quality of all testing done in the lab. Oversee the scheduling and training of all technicians and backups. Support and assist the Quality Assurance Manager and Supervisor to ensure departmental continuity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safety: Promote safety through personal conduct. Perform SAFE observations. Monitor and coach employees on the importance of being personally responsible for their own safety behavior. Ensure that unsafe conditions are corrected in a timely manner.
  • Customer Satisfaction. Ensures that all testing requests are prioritized and accurate, delivering on-time results.
  • Employee Training Development: Develop employees by providing training and necessary resources. Develop training materials. Assist with new hire orientation, and required customer documentation. Assist the Quality Assurance Supervisor and Manager to ensure performance appraisals and progress reports are completed in a timely manner. Facilitate the communication between production and all other plant and campus support functions.
  • Sanitation/GMP: Educate team members in 5S principles, chemical usage, sanitation guidelines, food safety guidelines and GMP's.
  • Technical Services Administration: Assist with maintaining accurate position descriptions and standard operating procedures. Monitor and audit 5S progress. Ensure accurate completion of records, and provide coaching and feedback when errors occur.
  • Manage Resources: Ensure the lab is stocked with employees and supplies at appropriate levels at all times. Provide effective training and leadership to staff and create a positive, productive work environment.
  • Continuous Improvement/Basic Principles: Demonstrate a daily commitment to the continuous improvement process by following Lean Manufacturing principles, and following the Basic Principles.

All employees are responsible for upholding the principles of SQF.

All employees are responsible for immediately reporting any food safety, food quality or plant security issues to management for appropriate action.

A trained designee will be appointed by management to cover for absences and vacancies.

Must maintain the highest standards of ethics and integrity while embodying the company values.

Must maintain the highest standards of data management by creating consistent, reliable data which will ensure accuracy and in turn, maximize the use of data and confidence in decision making.

Proactively manage safety by ensuring compliance with all Federal and State regulations and internal Company policies. Regularly complete behavior based safety observations. Ensure unsafe conditions are corrected in a timely manner.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor of Science degree B. S. in a science or related discipline from a four-year college or university preferred; High school diploma or general education degree GED with two to three years related job and leadership experience and/or training that gives the incumbent the ability to successfully meet all listed requirements of this position may also be considered. Demonstrated leadership skill and ability, effective interpersonal skills, training and facilitation skills, and intermediate operating knowledge of personal computers which includes experience with Microsoft Office software Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.. Demonstrate ability to multitask, make decisions and work in deadline situations.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to communicate effectively in writing. Demonstrate ability to effectively present information verbally in one-on-one conversations and in large group 20+ situations. Ability to effectively facilitate meetings.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to creatively apply experience and common sense to a variety of situations, processes and people. These situations may include conflicts between employees, equipment malfunction, and variation in raw material and process conditions. Ability to determine how to make the most efficient use of crew members. Ability to decide when and how to take malfunctioning equipment down for repair.

Be able to base decisions on facts and not emotions. Analyze a situation and react according. Be able to recognize out of spec conditions and deficiencies during inspections.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to sit and operate a personal computer.

The employee must be able to drive a vehicle and may be required to travel occasionally in a car or airplane.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid, and dry conditions. The employee occasionally must access high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme heat. The employee is also regularly in an office environment.
