Werner Gourmet Meat Snacks, Inc. is a Beef Jerky Manufacturer and has been producing quality Wholesale Meat Snacks at our production facility in Tillamook, Oregon since 1994. In 2006, Werner’s began producing a line of trail mixes, roasted nuts and candy products. This new snack line, together with our already successful meat snack line, helped the Werner brand expand into new markets throughout the country. In addition, Werner has recently opened a new restaurant on their property called “Werner Beef & Brew”.

We are looking for a Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance to join our team! This position is responsible for manages the quality and SQF programs. The position works closely with plant staff, manufacturing, sales and marketing, finance and accounting, regulatory agencies, suppliers, consumers, and customers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure Werner’s is following all regulatory local, state, federal, and respective laws in product destination related to manufacturing and labeling. Maintain thorough knowledge and applicability of regulations, such as: Food Defense, HACCP, SQF, and FSMA and USDA.
  • Set policies relevant to support quality customer and regulatory requirements. Policies relate to corporate, production facilities. Oversee supplier verifications.
  • Provide oversight of the customer relations process, including consumer and customer inquiries for complaints and supplier verification. Direct (or re-direct) investigations of complaint issues and oversee information inquiries to be certain the data being provided is accurate and appropriate.
  • Provide leadership and supervision of the quality and food safety group. Manage goals and objectives for staff. Provide formal and informal feedback through coaching, monitoring and evaluating job results.
  • Provide oversight for the Quality budget. Provide forecasting requirements for any and all budgetary needs. Manage spending to assure the delivery results within approved spending levels. Review and approve Quality department purchase orders and expense reports.
  • Create procedures to measure quality attributes as well as performing “collaborative testing” to make sure results are accurate and repeatable. Focus on analytical and microbiological as primary areas.
  • Ensure Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) finished products consistently meet the brand attributes and determine the best material utilizations to support this goal.
  • Lead and facilitate crisis management activities related to recalls, regional or plant specific threats, pandemics, business continuity, or any other even which may result in media coverage.
  • Serves as the point of contact for ProcessPro and leads efforts in becoming fully reliant on the ProcessPro system
  • Coordinates staff with objectives and assists in troubleshooting
  • Data Entry, entering and creating product, customer, and vendor codes. Collecting and entering into databases and into ProcessPro.
  • Determine the needs of the company in regards to Scanning and documenting in the new system
  • Developing numbering systems for the WHSE and facilitate its management
  • Assist in Food Safety related discussions
  • Set up and create documents as related to SQF, serve as point of contact for the SQF certification Body. (Eurofins)
  • Delegate to other office personnel for assistance with ProcessPro
  • Train all users in the system and create documentation for trainings
  • Manage Inventory and determine how it will be processed in the new system.
  • Stay current on trends within the industry as they relate to supply chain, Food safety and QA as well as stay relevant on current outbreaks and recalls

Qualifications & Skills:

  • For business and safety reasons, must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in written English; bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
  • This position requires a Bachelors’ Degree in a related field and at least 1 year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of HACCP, and food defense
  • Thorough knowledge of food quality and safety regulations, including FDA label regulations
  • Principles and practices of financial and manufacturing accounting.
  • Principles and practices of financial forecasting and budgeting.
  • Principles and practices of complex program and project development and administration.
  • Principles and practices of strategic planning and execution.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Manage and coordinate a variety of complex projects and/or programs.
  • Think strategically in order to drive organization-wide sales results.
  • Gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion.
  • Identify, research, and analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, and project consequences of proposed actions.
  • Effectively organize, plan, and execute.
  • Use computers and computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Meet behaviors established in Werner’s performance management and development process.
