The Company

Hampton Farms is the leading In-Shell Peanut Company in the US. We also are a leading producer of other types of nuts for the retail and commercial markets. You can find our product in most grocery stores and major league baseball stadiums. We distribute under the Hampton Farms brand and also are a leading private label manufacturer. This position is based at our new product Innovation Center in Raleigh, NC.

Purpose

The Food Technologist coordinates and conducts research and development activities in support of company objectives. The priority is on developing new creative food products for various markets (retail, foodservice, industrial). These items are to be based in nuts and nut butters. Product usages will range from snacking, to meal replacement, to ingredient markets. Duties also include supporting marketing in identifying business opportunities within the company portfolio.

Scope of Responsibilities

  • Develop new consumer preferred products and flavors that are reproducible at commercial scale. (understanding of quality and cost requirements, raw materials supply, adhering to regulatory guidelines, etc.)
  • Work with Marketing Team to ensure a continual flow of new products is in the future pipeline consistent with company strategic direction.
  • Partner with suppliers to monitor industry trends and evaluate ingredient or new flavor materials, product, processes and make recommendations for optimization based on project requirements.
  • Work closely with Marketing Team and outside testing resources on sensory evaluation. Make adjustments based on consumer feedback to ensure products exceed consumer expectations.
  • Maintain accurate records on all trials being performed.
  • Continually evaluate all aspects of cooking and packaging processes to potentially improve the final products for customers and consumers.
  • Identify new global trends in food processing which might apply to our product categories.
  • Create benchtop samples to evaluate new product ideas.
  • Work as part of team to ramp up R&D activity at the new Innovation Center in Raleigh, NC. Help to identify and acquire proper equipment for creation and testing of various products.
  • Establish proper processes and protocols for taking new products from concept, to bench samples, to production tests, to final commercial implementation.
  • Work directly with Operations personnel to ensure potential projects are feasible in our facilities. Coordinate and monitor trials to ensure consistency of product at start-up and capability to ensure long term consistency in product specs.
  • Participate in team projects and committees in order to improve internal processes.

Specific Knowledge and Skills

  • Basic Product Development: Knowledge of product development process with preference for plant-based protein experience. Flexible and creative attitude with a strong attention to detail.
  • Cooking: Knowledge of commercial cooking processes and techniques.
  • Ingredients: Knowledge of key ingredient properties in general and those specifically used for nuts and nut butter products.
  • Flavor Creation: Knowledge of flavor compounding and flavor creation and the ability to create and apply new flavor prototypes based on product briefs.
  • Analytical Chemistry: Ability to utilize and apply analytical instruments to assist with flavor creation and nutritional problem solving.
  • Computer Skills: Knowledge of Microsoft suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Requirements

  • Bachelorís Degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Food Technology, Food Chemistry or closely related field and interested in applying their knowledge to food innovation.
  • 5-10 years related work experience in research and/or product development role.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, organization and communication skills.
  • Highly organized self-starter able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Creative thinking and passion for food.
  • Willingness to travel, both to our multiple production facilities, potential vendor & supplier locations and to occasional industry events as needed.
