Entry Level Production Lab Tech (Hood River, OR)

Wyeast Laboratories, Inc., a licensed food processor located in Hood River, OR, is seeking a highly motivated person to fill a Production Lab Tech position. This full time team member is responsible for effectively performing duties which include: culture propagation, microbiological monitoring, quality control testing, and standardization of production cultures. In addition to all aspects of preforming standard laboratory duties, daily and weekly functions include working in a clean room environment, cleaning and washing lab ware, media preparation, microbial plating, cell counting, use of pH meter, microscope, and other bench top equipment. Work can include repetitive duties and extensive physical work/heavy lifting.

Job Functions:

  • Perform all steps of culture propagation
  • Monitor performance of fermentation tanks
  • Assist in maintenance of micro-fermenters air system
  • Perform microbial testing to ensure quality and conformity of product.
  • Record and maintain daily records with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Perform all standard lab duties including but not limited to media preparation, microbial plating, cell counts, washing lab ware.
  • Perform daily/weekly tasks which include cleaning, calibrating and properly maintaining lab ware and equipment, including but not limited to: test tubes, flasks, scales, cell counter, autoclaves, centrifuge, pipette, density meter, pH meter and dishwasher.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and sanitary work area through out each day
  • Complete nightly shutdown checklist
  • Develop a working knowledge of the company products and uses.
  • Understand and follow safety, SOPís, GMPís, food safety and other rules and policies.
  • Communicate and interact with other departments, employees and management personnel in a respectful and effective manner.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience in Food Microbiology laboratory, culture production or related field
  • Experience with basic laboratory analytical techniques
  • Knowledge of food grade chemicals, cleaners, sanitizers and substance handling
  • Must demonstrate a strong work ethic, be detail oriented and possess good time management skills in addition to clear written and oral communication
  • Ability to multi-task while being quality and detail oriented
  • Ability to understand and comprehend scientific language
  • Minimum 2 years college in related field; food science, brewing science, microbiology
  • Ability to fluently speak, read, write and comprehend directions in English
  • Must dress in clean clothing, remove jewelry and nail polish
  • Preforming general physical activities: requires considerable use of arms, legs and moving whole body, such as lifting up to 50+ pounds, balancing, bending, twisting, walking, stooping, handling and positioning of materials/products and stairs.
  • Computer literacy is necessary, including MS Office and ERP software
  • Must have stable work history
