The Role

This position provides leadership over all Sanitation and Pest Control related aspects at the Hermiston, OR facility. It also supports the food safety programs and will collaborate with other leaders to improve overall food safety at the facility. This position will also work with 3rd party sanitation/chemical and pest control vendors to ensure they are meeting contractual service agreements. This position reports to the Quality Assurance Manager.

Key Accountabilities

• Lead the development and implementation of plant procedures, work instructions related to Sanitation, Pest Management, and Food Safety. • Ensure the development and implementation of plant food safety (HACCP/HARPC) plans. • Support projects (new lines, equipment, etc) by providing guidance through Food Safety and Quality Risk Assessment. • Ensures equipment and environment is properly cleaned. • Ensure there is a robust inspection system for unsanitary practices and conditions and ensure sustainable corrective actions are implemented for deficiencies. • Provide leadership and guidance (proactively and reactively) to Operations in relation to internal, second party and third party audits and regulatory inspections. • Lead the determination of product dispositions in collaboration with Corporate Food Safety regarding food safety related restrictions. • Support Supplier Quality in ensuring new and existing suppliers have robust food safety systems in place by monitoring ingredients at the facility and ensuring corrective actions are developed and implemented for deficiencies. • Ensure implementation of existing and new microbiological and analytical sampling programs. • Supports plant sanitation in the effective use of chemicals, COP, ACS and CIP cleaning processes, Dry Sanitation processes, Environmental sanitation and Sanitary design. • Ensure automated cleaning systems are validated and automated cleaning circuits are verified for effective cleaning. • Lead operations during special plant sanitation issues including microbiological and environmental control. • Lead plant efforts to determine and implement effective hygienic zoning to control pathogens. • Ensure the continual progress against Environmental Monitoring for Pathogens and Saniation Effectiveness programs by leading teams to identify and implement sustainable solutions. • Works with 3rd party vendors and others to maximize technical expertise, optimize vendor products, information, equipment, and support trials in collaboration with Corporate Food Safety. • Monitor vendor reports to ensure deficiencies are being addressed appropriately and timely, and corrective measures are sustainable. • Assist in new plant/line/equipment startup (VSU, VAT, etc) activities that will include leading the development and review of SSOPs and cleaning verification documents. • Work with plant Sanitarians to ensure that all records are completed and are being reviewed and signed off (i.e.- chemical concentrations, CIP validations, pre-operational inspection, COP records, SSOP's, etc.) • Guide and collaborate with other support resources (i.e. Engineering, etc) regarding sanitary design of equipment and infrastructure. • Responsible for training and education of plant sanitation resources. • Conduct periodic sanitation and pest control assessments against the consistent application and execution of procedures and all related practices. • Mentor, develop, and manage any direct reports this position may be responsible for.

Skills & Experience

• B.S. in Food Technology, Engineering, Microbiology, or other related field is preferred. • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in manufacturing and 2 years of supervisory experience is required. • Certified Sanitarian preferred. • Knowledge in HACCP, Microbiology, Sanitation, Chemical Safety, Pest Control, and Quality Systems. • Understand and comply with government regulations relating to OHSA, FDA, USDA, and EPA. • Excellent understanding of food safety, sanitary design, sanitation and pest management in food processing. • Experience with using a full range of statistical and analytical tools and fundamentals. • Experience with regulatory, third party, and customer audits. • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), and excellent report writing skill. • Must demonstrate proven critical thinking, people and team development skills, strategic aptitude, and independent leadership. • HACCP Certification • Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) Training Completed • Proficient using Microsoft Office applications. • Valid drivers license. • Successful completion of company vehicle training. Physical Requirements: Incumbent must have the ability to effectively perform all of the following physical demands without assistance: • Sitting for up to 8 hours a day • Lift up to 25 pounds occasionally (up to 40 pounds infrequently). • Walking on various manufacturing facility surfaces • Climbing up ladders and stairs • Investigate cramped and confined spaces • Exposed to plant noises and vibrations • Temperature changes from hot to cold depending on work area
