Responsibilities:

The Regulatory Compliance Specialist is responsible for providing technical support to the Research, Culinary and Innovation (RCI) team and Food Safety and Quality Assurance (FSQA) department to ensure that all new product labels and collateral comply with all applicable US and International regulations. This may include labeling artwork and copy, advertising, web content, product claims, and nutritional fact panels. Work closely with Research, Culinary & Innovation team to develop HACCP plans for new products, cooking validations and new product technical specification development. This position is a corporate role reporting to VP of Food Safety and Quality Assurance.

In this Role you will:

Labeling and Regulatory Compliance

  • Review and approve all new and revised art for technical and grammatical accuracy to ensure compliance with international labeling regulations.
  • Function independently as a decision-maker on labeling regulatory issues and ensuring that deadlines are met.
  • Utilization of regulatory expertise to review, develop and deliver international labeling guidelines and associated documents.
  • Review acceptability and regulatory status of new product development formulas to ensure they are marketing appropriately in domestic locations and desired export country
  • Maintain expertise in domestic and international regulations of interest by understanding the existing and emerging regulations. Communicate all non-compliances to the VP of Food Safety and Quality Assurance and suggest corrective actions.
  • Champion and/or participate in continuous improvement efforts related to business practices and tools utilized within role.
  • Support the use and development of current and new tools, technologies and processes to support label development, submission, approval and tracking.
  • Ensure that decisions taken for labeling are accurately captured and communicated to appropriate stakeholders so that submission activities can be triggered in a timely fashion.
  • Conduct label audits to ensure that the correct labels are being released for print, printing is accurate and correct labels are in use at each plant.
  • Ensure consistency of labeling across product lines and compliance with client policies and procedures and applicable regulatory authority directives and regulations.
  • Analyze competitor labeling and ensures client products have most competitive labeling.

Product Development Technical Support

  • Organize and maintain new product, ingredient, and allergen documentation.
  • Support generation and control of technical documents for new products.
  • Work with both US and International regulatory consultants and maintain a database of their guidance.
  • Review international labels for accuracy and compliance with international regulations.
  • Support registration of new products with various certifying bodies- Gluten free, organic, non-GMO and other claims.
  • Assist with evaluation, approval of new suppliers and risk assessment of the new product ingredients.
  • Communicate with suppliers concerning nonconforming material.
  • Lead investigations for Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA) when related to products in the development pipeline, newly released products, or reformulations.
  • Work with internal and third-party labs to determine appropriate product testing requirements.
  • Special tasks or projects, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelorís degree in Food Science, Nutrition or related field required
  • 2+ years of experience preferred in FDA and USDA regulated industry
  • Preferably HACCP certified, labeling certification program
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Innovative and self-motivated, able to find a solution for or to deal proactively with work-related problems.
  • Critical thinker with a demonstrated ability to digest research and apply information
  • Working knowledge of the scientific method
  • Competent math skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to use tact and diplomacy with other departments, including communication with off-site staff and suppliers
  • Clear verbal and written communication
  • In-depth working knowledge of FDA food product regulations (21 CFR 101, 120) and USDA food regulations (9 CFR 417), guidance and policies, and a thorough understanding of the enforcement landscape
