The R&D Scientist – Product Development is responsible for understanding pet and pet parent’s needs and translating them into technical requirements and consumer models to drive business impact. The incumbent will leverage technical thinking skills to bring together consumer needs, science and technology into winning product innovation and renovation. He/she will have one or more defined areas of technical expertise, will initiate and leads technology or capability advances, and will be assigned to work on important business and technical challenges.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Lead the formulation and development of new Pet Food and/or Snacks product concepts
    • Lead cost savings projects as needed
    • Apply fundamental scientific principles in combination with a creative mindset to develop novel products.
    • Develop and publish formulation and finished product specifications
    • Implement all technical aspects of a project’s Formulation/Product Development work-stream and ensure that all assigned tasks are completed according to plan.
    • Coordinate and manage sensory/palatability testing, shelf life/stability testing and other key technical project deliverables
    • Author or contribute to technical proposals, summaries, presentations and project reports
    • Maintain technical documentation such as laboratory notebooks and invention records.
    • Keep abreast of new ingredients and technologies and recommend for consideration where appropriate.
    • Lead functional teams or projects with moderate resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity
    • Generally act as a resource for colleagues with less experience
    • Solve complex problems; takes a broad perspective to identify creative and innovative solutions within function
    • Work independently, with guidance in only complex situations (e.g., when decisions have functional or organizational impact)
    • Actively collaborate, build and leverage relationships across functional teams to achieve established shared goals or objectives
    • Partner with team members to develop key tasks and project plans for timely completion of goals
    • May provide daily coaching and supervision to a small number of individuals in own area of expertise
    • May be designated to represent R&D as Technical Lead on cross functional teams.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Education

This position requires a BS degree or higher in Science (e.g., Food Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Packaging, Nutrition), Technology (e.g., Engineering Technology), or Engineering (Chemical, Biomedical, etc.)

Experience:

    • Depending on degree type/level, zero (0) to ten (10) years in Research & Development required

Special Requirements/Skills:

    • Up to 20% Travel required
    • Must be willing/able to drive a company or rental vehicle as needed
    • Experience with formulation and development of food/beverage products or ingredients
    • Strong organizational, critical thinking and creativity skills.
    • Strong time management skills.
    • Effective presentation, verbal and written communication skills.
    • Expertise in food chemistry and ingredient  interactions a plus
    • Experience with commercial formulation software such as Concept 5 a plus
    • Dry/wet Pet Food and Pet Snacks formulation and product development experience a plus
    • Experience  working with Contract Manufacturers/Co-Packers a plus

    • Work and move freely and safely around manufacturing processes and equipment
    • Climb on stairs or ladders
