Description:

Nutrivo, LLC seeks a skilled food scientist / application technologist to join its internal product development and innovations team. This individual will work out of the Aurora, IL NPD laboratory to create a wide variety of functional food and dietary supplement mixes including protein powders, weight gainers, meal replacement shakes, performance snack foods, and pre-, intra-, and post-exercise products, intended to support healthy athletic lifestyles. Qualified candidates a) possess the education, experience, and skills needed to develop finished products from conceptual briefs; b) consistently deliver high-quality, accurate work within agreed timelines; c) are able to concurrently manage a number of different projects; d) work efficiently and proactively even in situations when direction may be vague or limited; e) are flexible and willingly accept constructive feedback; f) are reliable and punctual.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing product concepts that meet desired nutritional, organoleptic, and cost targets.
  • Works with other internal team members including purchasing, quality, production, and marketing to gather materials and information needed for successful project completion
  • Creates or refines theoretical formulation to ensure that all required parameters are met and that the project is within budget
  • Develops “bench top” samples
  • Prepares samples for internal or external evaluation; adjusts formula as needed until customer is satisfied
  • Oversees product scale-up runs to confirm that nutritional values, flavor, color, texture, foaming, and other aspects are maintained as each project moves from the lab to the production facility.
  • Monitors and adjusts final formulations as needed
  • Evaluate ingredients for suitability in new product applications, or as potential substitutes for existing products
  • Reviews vendor-provided documents
  • Contacts buyer or supplier to request more information or additional samples, as needed
  • Works with material to determine feasibility in intended applications
  • Provides feedback to buyer and general manager
  • Related duties including, but not limited to:
  • Prepares rough cost estimates for product concepts
  • Liaises with suppliers to identify new ingredients, technologies, and applications as well as for technical support with difficult ingredient combinations
  • Evaluates ongoing production batches to ensure compliance with established standards
  • Conducts experiments including accelerated stability, ingredient substitutions, and batching variations (as needed)
  • Interacts with external customers for project clarity (as requested or needed)
  • Enters / checks final formulations in ERP software
  • Proofreads nutritional and allergen information on product packaging for accuracy
  • Maintains detailed project logs and prepares weekly status summaries for the senior management team
  • Other duties as assigned by management

Ideal Candidates:

  • Have a proven track record of developing successful (commercialized) product concepts
  • 2+ years directly-related product development experience
  • Possess a BS or higher in food science, chemistry, or other related field
  • Are proficient with MS Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience working with Genesis RD and/or MS Great Plains a plus
  • Communicate clearly and concisely through verbal and written means
  • Work well independently and in cross functional teams
  • Are proactive, meticulous, and efficient.
  • Plan and prioritize to completes tasks efficiently and effectively
  • Arrive to work punctually and deliver projects on-time
  • Have an affinity for nutrition and an active, healthy lifestyle
