Shining Ocean, a seafood product manufacturer located in Sumner, WA, is in need of a QA Director to oversee all plant-wide food safety initiatives. This position will provide top-level leadership to ensure compliance in food safety. This position will report directly to the President and will manage the Quality Assurance staff.

Purpose of the Position:

As a key member of the executive management team, the Quality Director will assume a strategic role in the overall management of the company. This top-level Quality position will develop and implement strategic plans for cultivating a food safety culture, and evaluate and improve the overall company performance in food safety and quality, establishing metrics that drive results.

Job Duties:

  • Lead plant food safety and quality team with a focus on strategy, policies, programs and risk mitigation and hold team accountable to specific goals
  • Manage, coach and mentor all Quality staff; build on QA Manager strengths in order to ensure strong backup for the department at all times
  • Push agenda to ingrain a food safety culture across the business
  • Implement and maintain systems, policies and strategies
  • Lead through recalls and withdrawals
  • Develop Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) that drive food safety and quality
  • Lead interactions with regulators and customers as it relates to the function
  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory action and focus on execution
  • Enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce policies, procedures and controls of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the Company
  • Provide technical advice and knowledge to others within the plant
  • Contribute to the overall growth and value of the Company
  • Oversee regular meetings which foster collaboration among the team and provide constant training and new insights for the QA and Management team
  • Contribute "best practice" ideas to the entire team and for the Company
  • Succeed in building partnerships and fostering long-term relationships for the Company
  • Oversee all staffing and personnel decisions for the department
  • Oversee ongoing, plant-wide food safety training


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an applicable field of study such as Food science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or similar Science/Engineering required. Higher education preferred
  • 10+ years of experience, seafood processing operations or other Food and Drug Administration regulated food industry. Ten years of comparable work experience managing a functional team in a seafood processing operation with direct reporting oversight will be evaluated for non-degreed candidates
  • Complete understanding of food safety regulations, laws and best practices, in particular Seafood HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) and FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act)
  • Strong evidence of track record to build and manage effective teams
  • Track record of being able to identify and drive continuous improvement and change management initiatives; analytical and outstanding judgement with a strong operational focus
  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity; able to turn theoretic concepts into reality in a pragmatic manner
  • Experience leading GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) equivalent certification at a food production facility; specifically, BRC certification (British Retail Consortium)
  • Prior recall and withdrawal experience and knowledge
  • Well versed in product traceability
  • Proven leadership and risk management in a diverse working environment
  • Well organized and self-directed with a high level of executive maturity
  • Influential communicator, adaptable to audience as appropriate
