The role of the junior food scientist is to assist in the development of new products, improve existing products and processes, and provide technical support for the day to day business. The junior food scientist is expected to possess and demonstrate a solid understanding of food science, business practices, operations and the commercialization processes for leafy greens and other items such as beverages, frozen products, purees, etc.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

    • Apply food science and project management principles to new and existing products, to study shelf-life characteristics, sensory characteristics, food chemistry, food interactions and interactions with packaging.
    • Working knowledge of project design, protocol and execution
    • Develop shelf life extension protocols, scorecards and trending reports based on physical, microbiological and sensory testing.
    • Conduct consumer acceptability and preference tests by utilizing different sensory test tools.
    • Perform competitor product analysis and compare EBF product performance against competitors.
    • Evaluate physical properties of shelf life retains & samples from different seed varieties
    • Perform shelf life analysis on product packed at co-packer.
    • Evaluate product quality from R&I projects and suggest improvements to improve product quality and shelf life.
    • Evaluate new technologies available in market, compare with current processes and provide suggestions on improvements targeting higher efficiency and cost reduction initiatives.
    • Prepare and organize product evaluation meetings for seed variety, competitor product, co-packer product and R&I product; while gathering and then reporting on product data.
    • Develop protocols for collection and review of data using SPC methods.
    • Interpret shelf life data, report any unusual findings and make appropriate scientific recommendations through written and oral reports.
    • Provides basic knowledge and problem solving skills to adequately troubleshoot product quality issues.
    • Assist in packaging material testing and packaging material database maintenance.
    • Participate as an active member of cross-functional business development teams comprised of individuals from a variety of disciplines, including; marketing, sales, purchasing, engineering and other groups.
    • Inspect food processing areas during trials to ensure compliance with government regulations and standards for sanitation, safety, quality, and waste management standards.

Education : Bachelor's Degree from a 4 year college or university in Food Science, Packing Technology, Microbiology or a related field.

Experience: Six months to one year related experience

Computer Skills

Proficiency in MS Office Suite Programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and database software required

Other Requirements

    • Knowledge of post-harvest physiology preferred.
    • Familiar with physical, chemical and microbiological tests.
    • Knowledge of Instron, HPLC, GC and other similar equipment preferred.
    • Ability to work a 6 day work week with a varying daily schedule which may include AM and PM shifts, weekend and holiday hours.
    • English language skills including the ability to read, follow instructions, and write legibly. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
    • Strong sense of urgency.
    • Detail oriented and able to work in a fast paced manufacturing environment.
    • Knowledge/Training in Good Manufacturing Practices, HACCP, food safety requirements and regulations (Federal and State).
    • Data Management: Utilizes data collection and analysis methods to make fact-based decisions and influence others effectively.
    • Problem Solving: Systematically identifies, analyzes, and, troubleshoots to identify root cause accurately and proven ability to solve issues and reach optimum solutions in a timely manner. Knowledge of statistics required.
    • Communication: Effectively communicates complex information in written and verbal format to audiences of differing technical understanding. This may be internal and external customers; i.e. marketing/production/vendors/suppliers. Experience with use of PowerPoint for technical presentations required.
    • Teamwork and Integration: Proven effectiveness in working collaboratively.  Shares and achieves common goals with internal and/or external teams. Ability to work well with all levels of the organization from shop floor to senior management
