We are currently looking for a Senior Food Scientist (Starch Applications) to join our team.

This position is located within Earth Island's solar-powered production facility in Chatsworth, CA.

Reports to

Director of Product Development


Scientific professional within Earth Island’s R&D team with comprehensive ingredient functionality knowledge, with a focus in the area of starch application across a broad range of products. Provide skills, guidance, and expert technical knowledge concerning the scientific functionality of food, starch applications, and food ingredients for the successful launch of new products and support of existing products. Effectively execute and manage all technical aspects of the product development process from pre-formulation to commercialization.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for coordination and execution of benchtop, pilot, manufacturing scale-up and production batches. Provide technical and scientific input, support and assistance to bring new and existing products to market
  • Serve as internal starch expert and provide technical support and guidance to the R&D team
  • Provide guidance, direction, innovation, and expert advice to management, R&D, or other groups on technical, ingredient, or process-related topics
  • Establish long-range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them
  • Recommend and develop formula changes and enhancements
  • Source new ingredients and vendors. Build a catalog resource of outside industry contacts
  • Evaluate information to determine compliance with standards; using relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether ingredients or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards
  • Meet with vendor sales and technical representatives
  • Maintain accurate records of all development projects. Prepare technical documents relevant to area of responsibility or delegate to appropriate team member
  • Create, edit and update batch reports. Work with production staff on initial full production sizes
  • Support Quality Assurance (QA) in the improvement of existing products and procedures
  • Prepare samples for QA stability tests and provide scientific recommendations to ensure food safety and quality
  • Conduct technical evaluation for FDA compliant labeling – ingredient statement and nutritional analysis
  • Continue industry knowledge and seek out continuing education, trends, and technical advances
  • Supervise, guide and provide leadership to R&D team.
  • Collaborate with and take direction from Director of Product Development and CEO

Knowledge & Skills

  • Relevant educational background (MS or PhD) in Food Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or similar focus with extensive experience in starch technology and application and 10+ years’ food industry experience
  • Prefer 5 years’ minimum of Starch related application work in the food industry
  • Research experience a plus
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong, independent analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Strong computer skills
