R&D Principal Scientist, Dry Products – Remote - United States

GENERAL DESCRIPTION – PURPOSE OF ROLE:

This is a remote working opportunity with Blue Buffalo. The Research and Development Principal Scientist will conduct applied research in evaluating and improving palatability in various forms of cat and dog food. The role will provide strategic technical leadership to guide best flavor, best price, best partner for current and future palatant needs across portfolio and brands. Leads strategic technology research initiatives and product improvements through the preparation and processing of different types of pet food and the use of palatants to improve the organoleptic properties of these products. Acts as key coordinator with palatant suppliers and R&D application teams to meet business needs. Additionally, ensuring that all products are designed to meet the company’s strict food safety requirements by establishing and maintaining specifications for all finished products and raw ingredients.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Deliver against business objectives and individual goals by commercializing palatant based initiatives from concept to post production analysis

Work with director and senior management to secure resources for project execution and experimentation to deliver planned R&D initiatives

Partner with Sourcing to develop and screen palatants for product quality improvement initiatives and cost savings

Ensure strong technical alignment through cross-functional collaboration with business partners

 

Develop new methods of utilizing liquid and dry palatants for improving palatability of dry and wet pet foods

Identify and evaluate new technologies and report on new developments that enhance current products

Execute a continuous evaluation of ingredients and technologies regarding their functionality, implementation and feasibility

Initiate and lead product development efforts at bench, pilot and production scales.

Work collaboratively with other functional areas to ensure that new technologies are developed in an efficient and timely fashion

 

Ensure that all company food safety and product quality requirements are met in all formulations and provide support as requested

Provide all processing specifications and necessary support to operations to ensure products are proven for ongoing commercial production

Continuously improve existing products to ensure best performance (nutritional, palatability and stool) and cost optimization

Conduct efficacy research on new technologies and/or raw ingredients under evaluation

Maintain formula accuracy in formula database and provide relevant reports to support other departments

Ensure necessary documentation to substantiate product label compliance standards, feeding guidelines, statements of nutritional adequacy, and advertising claims is maintained

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Expertise in pet food formula design, stability studies, and palatability studies

Proficient in Concept 5 and Multi Step formulation software (SAP PLM) and the establishment of ingredient and finished product specifications

Working knowledge of manufacturing processes and operations related to all forms of pet food

Hands on experience in working with external partners including third party co-manufacturers, suppliers, associations, etc.

Experience with leading bench top experimentation, prototype development and pilot plant trials

Ability to leverage analytical, processing and sensory data to influence palatant selection

Excellent sensory evaluation skills and strong flavor chemistry skills

Experience in low acid food preservation using application-relevant processing equipment and other techniques.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Ability to prepare and present results, both written and oral, to all levels of management

Identify intellectual property opportunities (trade secrets or patents) to give the company a competitive advantage

Keep up to date with industry trends by networking with the technical community and attending meetings/conventions

Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently and excel in a fast-paced business environment

Excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication

Able to work in an environment with free-roaming companion pets

Travel 50% of time to attend test runs, plant commissioning, and team meetings

Pet parent preferred

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in food science, flavor chemistry, or sensory science or equivalent

Undergraduate degree in nutrition, chemistry, biochemistry or food science.

 

10+ years of experience in product development, flavor applications, or sensory science

Minimum of 5 years of experience in an industrial research setting formulating products with palatants and/or flavors
