What you will do:

The R & D Associate Scientist I is responsible to help design, execute, and analyze all Tillamook products and will assist with Continuous Improvements across Tillamook’s portfolio: Cheese, Butter, Whey, Cultured and Frozen Desserts. The Associate, can effectively create experiments of design and perform risk analysis mitigation strategies with minimal assistance.

Here’s a day in the life:

  • Basic background in food sciences in order to develop superior dairy products and improve process outcomes.
  • Tests new products in test kitchen and develops specific processing methods for plant trials, and confers with process engineers, flavor experts, and packaging and marketing specialists to resolve problems.
  • Build strong relationships and efforts with product development, suppliers, vendors, supply chain, engineering, sensory, manufacturing, marketing, and outside R&D teams.
  • Basic understanding of business operations.
  • Schedule and attend trial runs and first production runs. Must report results to a variety of audiences and interpret outcomes, for best practice, quality, and food safety.
  • Continually learning new skills and knowledge of the latest ingredients and technology that is applicable for ice cream and dairy products. It is expected that you continuously develop your competencies in these areas so that you are able to make significant contribution to projects in the areas of Dairy Products and sensory analysis.
  • Be confident, creative, and flexible in developing solutions to research challenges. This member must share a team-oriented approach, a dedication to delivering the highest quality work, and be strongly motivated to help the company reach success.
  • Operate with moderate supervision
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Intermediate knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Requires commitment to objectives of the organization
  • Product development experience exposure through university or industry.
  • Computer skills, including skills in the application of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), and is able to speak and understand the English language.
  • Communicates effectively and notices issues and brings to team for resolution
  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work and recognizes logical next steps with active stakeholders to proactively engage them.
  • Physical ability to taste test all of our products
  • Comfortable using journals and online resources to do research.
  • Drives NPD projects which are assigned directly to them. Engages with mentors and leaders to ensure that correct process, risk mitigation, PM tools and next steps are occurring when they should.
  • Presentation skills:ability to present findings to peers and leader of functional department and good external technical communication.
  • Experience writing technical papers
  • Act as a team player, and comfortable interacting with peers.
  • Good basic oral and written communications abilities.

Skills you’ll need:

Education:

Bachelors + < 2 years’ experience in a science or culinary field (s).

Experience:

Experience in production and product development in dairy or related businesses is desired.

Basic background in food sciences and understanding of business operations.

Experience writing technical papers and is comfortable using journals and online resources to do research.

Basic understanding of formula basics, and financial calculations. Drives NPD projects which are assigned directly to them and engages with mentors and leaders to ensure that correct process, risk mitigation, PM tools, and next steps are occurring when they should. Once given a specific NPD task, this person will effectively take through completion and recognizes logical next steps with active steak holders to proactively engage them.
