Position Summary: The Fresh Channel Quality Assurance Professional performs Food Safety and Quality Audits (FSQA), GMP inspections, and cold chain studies at key partner supplier facilities in the Wawa supply chain. Develops and executes test methods and sampling plans to monitor and evaluate products within the supply chain for compliance to Wawa quality standards. Utilizes knowledge of Wawa product specifications to identify and report non-compliances, determine shipment or rejection of product, and work with internal Wawa teams and supplier partners to resolve.

Principal Duties

  • Perform FSQA and GMP operational inspections at Wawa key supplier facilities. Monitor supplier compliance to Wawa food safety and defense requirements. Utilize knowledge of regulatory and Wawa food safety requirements to identify non-compliances, recommend mitigation options to the supplier, and ensure that effective corrective actions are implemented. Provide reports on findings, trends, and progress to Wawa internal partners and suppliers.
  • Sample, test, measure and evaluate products to assure ongoing compliance with Wawa specifications. Use knowledge of test methodology, product specifications, supplier process capability and discernment to accept/hold/reject products based on test results. Work with suppliers to modify processes and correct non-compliances as needed. Report test results to Wawa internal partners and suppliers.
  • Represent Wawa Quality Assurance as a member of the AM Foods Category Team. Ensure new category products and processes meet QA requirements from supplier approval to store execution. Assure that new supplier facilities introduced into the category are vetted through the appropriate risk based Wawa supplier approval process. Communicate proposed equipment and training materials to the broader QA team to assure review and approval of new products and processes for the category.
  • Monitor and respond to customer and store complaints on product quality issues or concerns for all AM, Snack, Bread, Bakery, and Specialty Bakery category products. Investigate complaints, obtain samples when needed, escalate significant issues to QA Management, and update Applix within the defined time frames. Analyze, track and trend data. Provide summary reports to Wawa internal partners and suppliers.
  • Audit new product commercialization test runs at key supplier facilities. Review supplier process to ensure compliance to regulatory, Wawa food safety, and Wawa quality standards. Work with supplier to adjust or correct issues as needed. Report test run findings to Wawa internal partners and supplier.
  • Meet with MA supplier management to discuss new products, current issues, and active projects that impact Wawa’s product offer and business. Work cross functionally with supplier QA, Wawa Supply Chain, and Product Development to improve processes and products.
  • Perform cold chain temperature verification testing for MA Cross Dock, Distribution Warehouse, and key supplier facilities.
  • Review third party audits for key vendors to ensure all food safety and quality standards are being met. Follow-up on any corrective actions noted.
  • Review AM product specifications submitted by suppliers to the AM Category. Collaborate with supplier to ensure specification contains all of the required information and approve when complete utilizing the specification management system.

Minimum Requirements

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Biology, or related field preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience within food industry Quality Assurance
  • Working knowledge of HACCP, GFSI, and FSMA preferred
  • Excellent computer skills including Access database, and Excel.
  • Direct experience in food manufacturing, supplier certification, and food distribution
  • ASQ certification in quality assurance auditing or other disciplines preferred
