The Iowa Department of Inspections & Appeals Central Office is looking to
fill an Environmental Specialist (Food Safety Specialist) to assist the state.
Incumbent must reside in Pottawattamie or Mills Counties.
This position will be responsible for completing inspections and complaint
investigations in food and lodging establishments including restaurants,
grocery stores, convenience stores, temporary food stands, hotels/motels, and
may be required to inspect food manufacturing facilities. The primary
inspection area in Western and Southwestern Iowa, but may be assigned
anywhere in the State of Iowa.
Some overnight travel is required, with occasional travel outside the area.
Nights and weekends are required at times particularly during the summer.
Essential functions include ability to drive a car; ability to think, reason,
and problem solve; agility to perform inspections, i.e. bend from the waist
daily, stoop daily, and climb ladders up to 25 feet occasionally, lift up to
50 pounds shoulder height occasionally; ability to read, write legibly, and
make presentations; ability to communicate effectively.
Those employees conducting federal inspections will require a background
Salary will be entry level of $46,217.60 per year unless otherwise required
by DAS/HRE rule.
12 semester hours in microbiology, biology, food science, chemistry,
hospitality management or other science related to food safety OR 6 months of
experience applying food science and microbiology knowledge to prepare or
process food safely, including but not limited to managing a food
establishment's food safety program, quality assurance staff, chef, or
management of a food establishment or manufacturing facility; experience
applying food safety regulations such as the FDA Food Code or Good
Manufacturing Practices; or a combination of both experience and
from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in natural
science; an equivalent combination of experience and education
substituting one year of full-time professional work in an environmental,
radiation control, environmental health or food sanitation program for each
year (30 semester hours) of the required education.
