Essential functions and basic duties

The Food Technologist conducts projects designed to help companies involved in the production or distribution of temperature sensitive food products to determine the root cause of cold chain problems and the appropriate corrective actions. He/she works with Sales and customers to create and present proposals and utilizes other Professional Services resources as appropriate to complete the projects. He/she conducts work/visits at customer sites, typically in food production plants, cold refrigerated environments, distribution centers, supermarkets and restaurants. These visits could be in cold refrigerated environments and could be off normal business hours to accommodate customer needs.

The Food Technologist will have significant interaction with our customers, including QA Managers and Operations Managers, as well as front line workers from companies involved in the production or distribution of food and pharmaceutical products. He/she will work with an internal cross-functional team that includes clerical personnel, data analysts, program/project managers, industrial engineers, scientists, and field technicians. This person will assist with the management of multiple projects and meeting aggressive schedules, along with additional tasks, as assigned. It is expected that occasional fieldwork and travel to support other business verticals, such as Life Sciences, will be part of the Food Technologist’s responsibilities!

 

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Executes multiple projects simultaneously to defined department standards, using accurate project management techniques: Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitoring and Control, and Closure
  • Engages and communicates progress to partners
  • Must continuously improve skills and expertise in key areas that are core to our business: handling of food and pharmaceutical products, process improvement and temperature sensitive management
  • Data Handling, including downloading, data conditioning and database setup
  • Participates in sales related activities concerning Professional Services Food and Life Sciences project work including writing proposals and presenting technical information
  • Supports with the execution of Life Sciences projects
  • Other tasks as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Food Science, Post-harvest is required (consideration may be given to Supply Chain Management)
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Spanish (able to write technical documents)
  • Strong knowledge of technical writing and able to write technical documents
  • Ability to analyze large quantities of data and create a detailed and actionable summary based on sound statistical analysis and expert commentary
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work directly with customers
  • Strong Project Management skills and MS Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word required
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills for customer-facing and web based presentations
  • Ability to be flexible in an environment where priorities change frequently
  • Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively to meet customer requirements
  • Capability to adapt personal style, project management approach and methodology to the needs and requirements of the company, customer and specific projects assigned
  • Creativity, problem-solving skills, strong analytical and communication skills required
  • Must be organized and detail oriented
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of process improvement methodologies and statistical methodologies such as SPC is helpful
  • Two (2) years of project management work experience preferred but not required
  • Work experience in food or refrigeration industries is a plus
  • Knowledge of Good Documentation Practices is a plus
  • Knowledge of Food GMPs, HACCP, SSOP is a plus

Travel

Up to 25% travel may be required, depending on customer needs. This typically involves 1-4 day trips within North America to visit customer sites.
