Food Safety and Quality Manager - Mars Symbioscience

Location - US preferred east coast


This position leads and manages the Quality and Food Safety team in order to assure the production of high quality, safe and legally compliant products that meet the desired product design and customer expectations. This role is responsible for ensuring that the operations of Mars Symbioscience are maintained in accordance with relevant requirements for: the manufacture of dietary ingredients and foods (21 CFR part 117), dietary supplements (21 CFR 111), and electronic records (21 CFR 11), as well as their equivalent EU regulations. This role provides governance of the Quality and Food Safety Management process and leads the implementation of the Mars Standards.


What are we looking for?

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Food Science, Engineering, or related technical field required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years relevant experience in Dietary Supplement, Food Quality and/or External Co-Manufacturing environment with proven capabilities leading other technical teams/projects
  • Proven technical experience in the dietary supplement industry.
  • Proficient in relevant food laws (FDA 21 CFR parts 117, 111 & 11 and EU equivalents)
  • Minimum 2 years' experience leading teams (direct/indirect)
  • Advanced understanding of quality systems and food safety programs
  • Must be able to draw on personal experience and apply own judgment to reach firm decisions
  • Experience in HACCP, GMPs, ISO 22000, ISO 9001 quality and food safety management systems
  • Certified auditor
  • Basic understanding of food microbiology, analytical chemistry, and sensory methods
  • Basic understanding of engineering, manufacturing equipment, and controls
  • Activity Management Process
  • Proficiency in statistical quality control systems


What would your key responsibilities be?

  • Line Management and coaching of the Q&FS Team, supporting the development of a talent pipeline for Q&FS at site level including co-manufacturer quality
  • Ensures compliance to relevant 21CFR 111, 21 CFR 117, and 21 CFR 11 (and EU equivalent) regulations for the use/release of raw materials and finished products.
  • Leads Quality Strategy Deployment at the site, improving established ways of working and delivering against key metrics reflected in the company business and related quality objectives/metrics
  • Leads and supports CocoaVia brand and Mars standards implementation at the site and drive the appropriate Q&FS mindset and behavior
  • Leads and supports approval of co-manufacturing sites from a Quality standpoint, improving established ways of working
  • Sustains efficient quality management system, in compliance to relevant legal/regulatory and internal Mars standards, including CAPA and training programs
  • First line of contact for legal authorities and CocoaVia on product related Q&FS requests as the “quality responsible person” for the brand
  • Performs key metric, incidents and Continuous Improvement reviews to ensure transparency at management level and coordinate site CAPA activities
  • Manages quality and food safety incidents at the site level, supporting decision making for out of specification materials and products, ensuring that relevant corrective and preventive actions are defined and implemented
  • Accountable for site approval of all product, raw materials, packaging and process specifications, quality food safety risk assessments and change management, using the defined and agreed ways of working
  • Leads key continuous improvement projects / strategies that enable the delivery of Q&FS objectives and performance. The tasks are executed in close collaboration with Commercial, Product Development, and QC Lab
  • Ensures the appropriate level of resources, skills and support at site level is ensured via coaching, developing and managing the Quality Team.
  • Ensures governance of Q&FS performance on site through appropriate Q&FS culture and behavior and has a significant impact via proper incident management on site, including CAPA program
  • Provides input and governance to the quality systems and programs for the supply chain operations.
  • Ensures adherence to the Mars Global Q&FS standards, including but not limited to Product Related Incident Management Process (PRIMP), Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), QMP, Mars Quality Management (MQM), and Premia standards.
  • Interacts regularly with Mars Global Q&FS Associates to ensure consistency in auditing and standards.
  • Supports trouble shooting Q&FS improvement initiatives.
