Position Summary

Reporting to Director FSQR and the Plant Manager(s) the Quality & Food Safety Manager will be responsible for quality, food safety and regulatory affairs for Hughson Nut Inc. (HNI) Almond plants in California. This position will be responsible and accountable for operational Quality Assurance programs and the execution of the same. They will provide the day to day support to the operations team for the measurement and management of product quality and will work to ensure food safety across the product portfolio manufactured at the HNI plants. The Quality & Food Safety Manager will lead a team of supervisors and technicians to operate the laboratories through the year and will provide data and troubleshooting support to the operations team. The QA and Food Safety manager will also ensure all programs and procedures meet the regulatory and customer compliance standards. This position requires experience in operational Quality Assurance management in Industrial processing plants. Expertise required includes quality systems such as British Retail Consortium (BRC)/ Safety Quality Food (SQF), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), technical expertise in the area of physical, Chemical and Microbiological analysis.

Position Responsibilities

  • Ensure full compliance of all products from the HNI plants with all government food safety regulations and maintain the highest level of food safety.
  • Ensure that facilities are in compliance with all GMP, HACCP, and GFSI (BRC) guidelines.
  • Interact effectively with FDA and other regulatory personnel, food safety auditors, and customers to maintain positive and responsive relationships and assure rapid corrective actions through dynamic leadership and timely documentation.
  • Develop, schedule, and direct GMP, Food Safety, and Quality Management System audits. Monitor corrective actions to deficient findings for completion and effectiveness, providing gap closure assistance to the manufacturing facilities.
  • Responsible for disposition of product based on Quality Inspection results and data management of the same on Nutware/SAP system.
  • Lead HNI HACCP and Food Safety team for product designs, manufacturing processes, Food Safety plans, environmental monitoring, and pest control programs. Manage the finished product microbiological testing programs, allergen program, and sanitation programs.
  • Validate and ensure compliance with established food safety and quality objectives through daily monitoring programs, team supervision, and on-going verification of internal and external laboratory or industry benchmarking.
  • Ensure that all pasteurized products meet or exceed the microbiological product safety norms.
  • Establish new and improved quality/safety programs, policies, and procedures to ensure that established standards of quality are consistently achieved, measured, documented, and maintained. Provide food safety risk assessment information, new technology information, and risk management strategies.
  • Engage with large multinational corporations who are Olam's key customers with respective QA team to understand and apply quality systems and programs in compliance to customer requirements.
  • Conduct training programs for the Quality teams with emphasis on continuous improvement through identification and analysis of customer complaints and requirements.
  • Support the Central QA and Food Safety team in undertaking root cause and corrective actions from customer complaints and implement the corrective actions with the plant operations team.
  • Host and successfully complete QA audits from customers and BRC audit team.
  • Undertake Supplier Quality Audits and ensure ingredients and packaging material suppliers are compliant as per the requirement of the BRC system and Olam QA systems.
  • Responsible for maintaining the Organic, Kosher, Halal certifications for products manufactured by the HNI plants are as per the requirement of the customers and central QA team.
  • Provide data, resources and participation in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Food Science /Microbiology or related discipline is required. Candidates with five (5) years Quality Management experience can substitute experience in lieu of degree requirement.
  • Five (5) years leadership experience in multiple types of food processing, preferably in edible nuts industry, is required. Candidates substituting experience in lieu of degree require ten (10) years of total Quality Management experience. Previous team building and leadership skills will be crucial in this position.
  • Extensive technical knowledge and experience in Food chemistry, Microbiology and Food safety is required.
  • Ability to understand plant operations, which include raw edible nuts handling, Almonds processing machines, color sorters, roasters, pasteurizers, and retail product manufacturing and packaging is required.
  • Ability to lead and develop a team of supervisors in both technical capability and effective communication is required.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including verbal and written, with a demonstrated ability to effectively work with all managerial levels, customers, regulatory, and industry organizations is required.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills with and ability to understand the key requirements in the Quality Systems, and development of continuous improvement programs is required.
  • Previous Knowledge and experience working GFSI and BRC auditing is required.
  • Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification and experience is required. Formal audit training or equivalent certification and experience will be considered in lieu of HACCP certification.
